I love painting the colours and light of my home, Spain. This is in the North, Picos de Europa, near Fuente Dé. Picos de Europa is a young mountain chain, and being young is full of sharp peaks and interesting shapes. All the clouds coming from the sea get stuck in this mountains, that’s why Spain is generally dry while in this region it rains a lot.
I already posted a scene from that hike, here is another one. Oils on A3 stretched canvas.
Not entirely happy with the dappled light… I may try to improve that.
C&C very welcome

April 14, 2024 at 10:22 am #1545813The dappled light maybe needs its value raised a bit, but it is all good already! Very pleasing colors, reminds me our vacations, although we mostly go to Italy.
You manage so many details on A3, for me it always feels too tight.

C&C always welcomeApril 16, 2024 at 5:17 am #1545916AnonymousThank you, Ilya. A3 is not that small, I wonder if you are thinking of A5 instead, it’s confusing. I’ll try improving the dappled light, it’s an important part of the scene.
Italy, Spain.,, I guess Mediterranean countries share the same lightThe forum is very quiet…

April 16, 2024 at 8:36 am #1545941For me the star of this painting is the distant mountains, which are very well done. You might consider a more square format featuring the mountains more. Having so much of the painting devoted to the path puts pressure on you to make it more exciting. I have tried a simple crop (not the final answer) below. Let me know if it was in appropriate to show it here. Gary

Gary, your suggestions are very welcome, thank you! I think you are right, even a landscape format could have worked better. I think I tend to paint in vertical format, don’t know why. Anyways, I have to make the path interesting now I wanted to paint it, dappled light is beautiful and here provided a good sense of the atmosphere, and love those earthy oranges

FedeNo, I know A3, 2 cm longer than 30×40. I used them for first attempts but it seems small now, I prefer 50 cm the shorter dimension. There is french 55×46, which I like too. But I need to try smaller – I don’t live in a palace, and walls are used for things like mirrors or shelves sometimes.

April 16, 2024 at 5:58 pm #1545992I hope to see Spain in the next few years Fede! I can only imagine how beautiful it is. Your mountains are painted so well in this piece. I like what Gary suggested as it brings more attention to how well painted they are.

Thank you, Wes! Spain is super diverse in terms of landscapes. From the greener North to the deserts in Almeria where lots of Westerns were filmed. All sorts of mountain chains, with very interesting and varied geology, the coast, the islands, Andalucia, endless (largely uninhabited now) plateaus, … all accompanied by very diverse cultural heritage: Muslims (Al Andalus), Jews (Sepharad), Germanic peoples, Romans (Hispania)… they all considered this land their home.

April 17, 2024 at 1:54 pm #1546056AnonymousAlthough I love showing my work and seeing others work, I’ve been wanting for some time to take some forum holidays. My plan is to take a few weeks, in search for something, not sure what. With this statement I want to help myself achieve that. Best wishes to all and much joy painting, keep the brush moving and thank you for all the encouragement, I’ll surely miss the forum.

April 18, 2024 at 10:53 am #1546105I think the composition and the idea are good. I took the liberty of converting to grays so that you can see how narrow the value range is (I often have the same problem!).
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.
