I have just located a freeware grid generator for Photoshop (works with Elements) and it seems to be the answer to those who use grids to enlarge their photos for painting.
It is called the Richard Roseman Grid Generator and is available on a free download from here:
http://photoshop.pluginsworld.com/plugin.php?directory=adobe&software=photoshop&plugin=185&plug=gridgeneratorSimply extract the .8BB file and put it in your plugins directory and restart photoshop. May work with Paintshop pro too – they ususally do.
You can choose the grid colour any number of grids above 5 and clock Draw Line. the OK. Here’s an example:
Hope you find it useful.
EDIT: It works with Paintshop Pro 9 too and prints out with the picture.

Assuming you clicked on the link, scrolled down and downloaded the plug-in. When you unzip it, place the files in your paintshop pro plugins folder.
Next time you start up Psp from cold it will find the new plugin.
On my “Effects” menu it is shown as “Richard Boseman” and appears inside one of my existing plugin collections.
BTW When I just tried it, I had to select All the picture before my plugins would appear in the list  Don’t know why.

We must leave our mark on this worldMarch 8, 2004 at 6:54 pm #1025738AnonymousI just downloaded it and tried it (PSP 8.1). It appears here: Effects/Plug-ins/Richard Roserman/Grid Generator… But when I open a picture, then apply the plug-in, I get a white grid on solid black – my picture seems to disappear. I’ll see what the help function has to say about this.
Got it. Had to experiment with the transparency of the grid background a bit. I now have white grid on a photo that is fairly dark. Looks like it’s pretty easy to change the grid color to something dark, for a lighter picture. Or a bright color (lime green or yellow or orange…) for a photo that’s mostly in midtones.
Works well. Thanks Doug.
March 8, 2004 at 7:04 pm #1025719I think I had a black grid and a black background, but made the background 100% transparent.
You have to fiddle about in the absence of instructions.

We must leave our mark on this worldMarch 9, 2004 at 2:13 am #1025732Well I downloaded it, not sure were it went tho’ cause when I tried to unzip it it said there were no viewers for it..
I found a grid in paint shop pr 7.2 that is white, when I printed out the pic the grid didn’t show up..
I can change the line colour on the grid, but I cant print it on the pic….:( Any idea why???

My Youtube videosMarch 9, 2004 at 2:53 am #1025720Judy – download the plugin which is a .zip file and save it on your Desktop.
Then double click to Extract it and locate the .8BB file in your Program Files/Jasc Products Inc/Paintshop Pro 7/Plugins folder (Adobe/Photoshop/plug-ins folder for Photoshop users).
Next time you start Psp the programme will find the new plugin. You will have to go down the “Effects” list and look for “Richard Roseman/Grid Generator”.
When you have a picture on screen, apply the grid effect and choose a black grid (you can have any colour) and a black background. Then move the B slider all the way to the right to make the background transparent. Bingo!
This grid wll print out with the picture.
NB In my case I had to select all the picture before the grid would work, also it would be safer to apply the grid on a new layer.

Read the thread above again – you have to move the B slider to the right to make the background transparent. You can choose any colours except white for the background, but make it transparent.
And dont save the picture with the grid on unless you give it a different name!
