Hello all. I have recently been looking about the large realm of Naples Yellow formulas from dif. paint lines. Obviously it is a staple color but not a staple pigment.

I like the idea of chrome antimony so that I am dealing with only one pigment and it is close enough to the color/shade I want as it is but my question about it is what kind of dryer is this pigment. I have looked on web a bit and have read about it’s chemical comp and structure but those aren’t painting terms. Blick is a great resource but does not say anything about drying rate.

Is chrome, being an inorganic, a quick dryer? I have real flake white, should I mix my own chrome antimony titanate with flake white for a Naples Light hue and call it a day? I am leaning toward this as a Naples of anywhere from 3-5 pigments seems excessive and doesn’t lead me to believe it will dry all that quickly with the PW6 in the mix.

PS. I am an older member with new account due to hacked account

It’s an average dryer. I’m using it at the moment as a substitute for Cad Yellow Deep although I’m going to pick up both genuine Cad Yellow Deep and Naples Yellow soon enough.

I don’t love PBr24. It’s ok. I prefer it to the yellow lakes, which some people use as a substitute for Naples and Cad Yellows, but only because I never use the yellows at their most vibrant so I don’t really need the chroma of the lakes. The chroma of PBr24 is fine for me for now. People painting flowers etc might need a brighter yellow.

My PBr24 is W&N Naples Yellow deep. It’s an orange-leaning yellow, quite strong. I don’t think I have ever seen it in any professional artist’s permanent palette and I don’t really trust it  because of that.

I really like the real thing, PY41. I’m currently using this one from Sennelier:

            Amber Ochre[/URL]

and someday I’ll get around to trying the two from Michael Harding.

Llawrence is the Sennelier Naples Yellow as mustard-coloured in real life as it is on the Blick swatch?

It’s a bit brighter than that, and makes nice clean yellow tints. It isn’t cadmium yellow, that’s for sure, but I find it very useful. And I think it’s a really nice paint overall from Sennelier.

OK llawrence thanks for the suggestion…as I had been wading through the color swatches on blickus dickus I hadn’t thought to look under amber ocher for real naples yellow, I must be so ignorant!

I suppose Sennelier didn’t want to scrap their naples yellow line up after they came out with their PY41???

Lead paints have a certain draw for me so I will have to check it out.

to Carcharhinus , thanks also for the thoughts on Pbr24 I hadn’t given it much thought but since you have mentioned it I have not really read any references to pro artist using the antimony on their palettes either. I must also state that it is only the more reputable paint makers that seem to be using it in their artist lines so that could be a pro for it’s use tho at least.

                    Thanks again.

Sennelier can be quite bizarre with their pigment choices and marketing names. Why on earth would you take a desirable pigment like PY41 and name it “ochre”?! I would never have found it myself if I hadn’t been doing a hunt for pure earth pigments.
