When you copyright art you have to use your full legal name. If someone infringed how would you be able to protect your art with a pseudonym? For copyright protection you need your legal name and copyright symbol and date somewhere on the painting that can be seen, front or back. I am just wondering.

Authors use psuedonyms all the time. The work is still copyright to them.
Where are you getting your information? Nowhere in the copyright legislation does it say you must have your full legal name, symbol and date.

I’ve been selling art on Etsy and am finally getting to the point where I make regular sales and helping with some much needed income for my family. I was approached by a gallery owner to sell art through a cafe venue he is setting up, but my prices online aren’t gallery level prices. He suggested that I paint for galleries under a pseudonym so I can keep my etsy business and not be locked out of galleries due to pricing.

Anyone else ever heard of this?

hello – what I do is sell only prints online (Etsy mainly), and my originals go to galleries. In this way galleries have nothing to complain about.

Here’s what’s probably the most extreme case of this: an artist who created a show of 100 artists, all of whom are him:

Well worth the time to read this story. Thanks for sharing.

Solvent = Leaner Oil = Fatter Drawing is the basis of art. A bad painter cannot draw. But one who draws well can always paint. (Arshile Gorky)
