Here’s mine!
Boy was this a challenging piece to do!!!!! I had the most trouble with the cherubs, as you can see one looks pregnant and I could not get the color of the bowl of the fountain right for nothing. This was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it though. I love his paintings! Thanks for introducing him to me Pam!

Yes, it was fun to try to paint this, really makes you think and plan what to do and try new things.

January 25, 2004 at 6:49 pm #1022232Hi Pam,
Thanks for a great project. I’ve loved looking at each of the copies. And having a reason to study the Sargent painting so closely.I was in awe of his sweeping brush strokes that so accurately captured the details and the LIGHT of the scene. It must come from years of skill and talent and knowledge in the application of the paint, but I think more it comes from the SEEING that he was able to do.
I also found it hard to render it in subtle colors and palette, yet have it appear vibrant and not washed out. I’ve reworked my piece and I like it better. Also, I found myself focusing on the colors and small shapes, and kinda lost any sense of what the actual objects were I was painting. Better to keep some idea that the swoop and shadow is a leg, you know?
Can’t wait to read others.

I struggled to find out which colors were which because he glazed one over another in various places and it was hard to recreate to get the same value. My painting is washed out.. literally too – I took it as an exercise and didn’t consider the end result worthy of either keeping or giving or selling.
Still, I enjoyed it much – puts you in someone else’s shoes and humbles you: sometimes people say this and that about something, but when they try to do it themselves they realise it was easy enough to talk… To do is what matters in the end. And Sargent did well!
