        Hi,

I’m not quite sure where to ask this question. I use Alvaro Castagnet’s watercolour brushes from NEEF. The handle of these brushes is varnished red. They are expensive brushes, and they are also good except for one aspect: the red varnish crumbles off the back of the handle. Does anyone recognise this? Does anyone have any idea how to prevent and fix this?

        Thanks!

That looks like a manufacturing issue.  I have had very old (like decades) varnish finish brushes crack and chip on the ends, but not anything new.  Maybe contact who you purchased them from.

My DIY redneck solution would be to coat them with a polyurethane varnish being careful to stay away from the brush end.   There are some that are water-soluble, so easy clean up.   Also store carefully.
