Buildings
Landscape (Trees)
Glass – still life
FurMetal?
Hmmm – knife ….. hmmmm ……. that would be a huge experimental-learning curve for me – haven’t used knives for such a long time! Struggled with them with this medium – fine with oils …… go figure!;)
I’m willing to try though – perhaps combine landscape and knife painting?Over to you Gang
Cheers, Maureen

Count me in! Any subject is fine but I do love a landscape with a building or trees (or fur or glass or rivers or big clouds or…) Basically I’m saying I’m not much help.
Edited to add, knives would be interesting but might be a bit difficult or frustrating for those that have never used them. I was thinking too, it’d be a shame for people to buy them then end up not using them, I know some people are on limited incomes art supply wise though I have made them before with those fake credit cards that come in junk mail. We could do a try a knife thing if you have them and want to but also have it be okay for people not to use them if they don’t want to, if that makes sense.Colin, your tulips came out so beautifully, you did exactly the right thing. Whites are terrible to photograph, I didn’t think of that when I choose the ref!
Bhavani, we’ll have to take your paint brushes away next time. It’ll be interesting to see what else you do though when you revisit it.
Susan, I think the flowers might look odd to your eyes because that’s not a natural pattern, it’s a hybrid. Those are also two colors that aren’t the easy to photograph when they’re close to each other. They look great to the rest of us though so you’re being way too hard on yourself!
ArtsyMom, hope you join in, this is very enjoyable.

Could be painted with a sense of whimsy or foreboding.

March 24, 2013 at 2:13 pm #1197225I can’t settle on one thing lately-just can’t sit still & pay attention- I’m blaming it on the medicines (about 10 more days til I’m off the drugs )
I feel a little better about the vase, checked it out on the big screen & it’s not finished but I know where I’m going with it.

Actually CM knife painting in acrylics isn’t too difficult. I had some fights with it at first, but then I re-read Coulton Waugh’s books on knife painting. There was a wee tidbit of info on acrylics that made all the difference. Dip the knife in water (or very dilute medium) first. That helps create a space between the knife and the paint, so it flows and drags more akin to oils.

I’ll search for a suitable ref that fits this description!
That sounds like a good tip Andrew – will try it, thank you:)
Plenty of time to think about the next one then – with Artsymom (hi Lil), a.drew and Stee not yet finished and April just a bit ahead :D:D
Looks good April – I like what you’re doing with that vase:) Keep taking the tablets – you need them, said your doc

I know I’m a bit of a slowpoke but I hope to finish this week. I know I’m not a fast painter and I have also been working on my March floral challenge.
Another paint along sounds good–after I finish this one.

Bhavani…thanks! Ah, the painting over…been there!
WWWeeelllll…Maureen? ummm…I still hated it. tried painting more on top, and good lord it was just tooooo thick. So this morning I scraped/scrubbed/sanded almost all of them off! Of course I ended up having to touch up the bg a bit and the leaves, as nothing ever works quite the way you want… I know what you mean about the stems…hopefully they are better now.
Yes yes…more paint-a-longs! Just NOT tulips…please!
Hi Lil! Jump on in the water’s fine.
Colin, thanks…they are gone…at least that incarnation of them. I like these better…but cannot get a photo of them to save my life, and taking one indoors never seems to work. I might try later, but just wasted 2+ hrs trying to manipulate the colors to make it look right…sigh!
Virginia…so I am discovering today anyway…I got them to where I at least like them…but cannot photograph them… even tried merging two, and that did not work either. The closest I got, left the pot pink and a sort of chartreuse… I never should have chosen that kind, but I get bullheaded and figure I can do it if I just keep trying. haha I did have fun watching Donna Dewberry, whip them out, and I got a couple on paper that almost looked ok…but not on the canvas, probably because there was already a specific spot and size they had to be. Still, I hope to never paint any again, or at least not for a long time!
Oh Colin…you are a breath of fresh air, and I so needed a good laugh!
April…wow!! You are so on your way!
Hi Judy…maybe I should go check out the floral challenge? it’s not tulips is it??

(I taught a Donna D. 5 lesson course once. Will not do that again! not one person could deviate from the instructions & be free- someone actually told me she could only paint while my hand was over hers, guiding her brush…um, I think that meant I painted with her hand in my way )Maureen, another PAL sounds good, I have no suggestions, could use whatever practice is thrown my way.
It’s Easter week…maybe that could inspire the theme.
Or we’ve got Colin’s suggestion- Colin, no byplane writing in the sky or a clown with balloons? Where is your sense of adventure?? Is there even a water-skier on your river? Jonah emerging from the belly of a whale? A waterspout spewing seaweed?
Thanks for checking on mine, all, I’ll be back at it later tonight.

Oscar WildeMarch 25, 2013 at 10:42 am #1197233Wow – everyone did a great job. Never got past sketch and painting background. Had elective surgery on Friday and thought I’d be up to painting afterwards but clearly everyone works fast so maybe the next one. Really enjoyed looking at all the different ways people approaced the painting. Pam
March 25, 2013 at 12:12 pm #1197118Pam – there’s still time if you are able to finish – some haven’t started yet!
Also, the thread will remain open and probably stay on the front page:)Hope you’re feeling better each day
