Susan – an exciting alternative interpretation – I like the red/green combination and that pot is a very good shape.
Judy – good start – those leaves won’t look nearly as solid when you get some bits of b/g peeping through:)
Just watch the ellipses on the jugDream-time here so I’ll say ” G’night all ”
Cheers, Maureen

Find me on FacebookMarch 22, 2013 at 8:18 pm #1197146Thanks, Cindy! Thought maybe I could learn to paint metal while doing this one…so far mostly learned how NOT to paint metal… Will read thru’ the classroom on it later, but may not use it for this one. Definitely learned that just cause it is metalic paint, it won’t miraculously look like metal… Hope your grand is ok.
Bhavani…thanks!! I probably should not have changed the tulip colors as it sort of goes way away from the original idea…, but just did not want two of the same…and definitely did not get them.
Judy…looking good to me, and if you give the leaves a bit of ‘air’ (space), I think you are well on your way! Thanks…all I can think of is the song…girls just want to have fun…tho’ it’s been a LONG time since anyone called me a girl…
Thanks, Maureen!! The pot, ah yes, the pot…
Sweet dreams!Virginia…thanks!! and thanks for letting me do two…:)
Not sure if any of this is an improvement or not…but here ‘s where the second one is. It’s signed, tho’ I may tweak a thing or two… Kind of gave up on making it look any more metallic…I put on some iredescent medium and glazing medium to try and give it some shine…OOPS! so painted back over that…and decided it is what it is. It looks pretty cool from certain angles, but others…eh…

March 22, 2013 at 11:15 pm #1197245Thank you all – Maureen, Cindy, Susan, Bhavani, Stee, Judy and Virginia for kind comments and helpful suggestion about the tulips. I was out of town all day to deliver a seminar in North Vancouver, but have been checking in on the I Phone all the great paintings that have been posted.
Cindy, your painting has turned out very beautifully. You have created a calm. almost wistful contemplative mood.
Judy you’re well on your way.
Susan both of yours are super, the red one really pops.
Stee – I neglected to comment on your painting yesterday but I really like what you’ve done.
The tulip repainting will have to wait. I arrived home to huge mound of dirt in the driveway. She Who Must Be Obeyed has started our earthworks project. We’ll see how much canvas time I get this weekend. :clear:

Oscar WildeMarch 22, 2013 at 11:54 pm #1197246April don’t worry it’s coming along just fine. The modelling on the vase is really looking good. And you found all five tulips!
What shade of blue did you use for the vase?
Like me it’s a matter of getting the tulip flowers, but you’ll get there.

March 23, 2013 at 8:38 am #1197109Lol Colin – now I understand about the garden in the driveway:lol:
Catch as and when you can …. if the weather is kind, the garden and Lady of the House take priority (and not necessarily in that order!)April – I agree with Colin’s comment:)
The vase is already looking very solid and when you get more layers to bring out the colours and tones, it’ll be fine …….. we all go through the ugly stage in the paintings!Susan – The background has a lot more force now that’s it’s smoothed and a ‘corner’ defined:) … still think the pot/vase is good – would leave it now:) I like this painting:)
Bhavani – I hope you didn’t change that bottom tulip!!!!
Cheers, Maureen

April, I go through ugly phases too, even when I paint. I like the ugly phase cause I know I’m getting there! Your vase is looking good, so solid and a nice shape too. I like that texture coming through too, so interesting!I have to go crack the whip and get my husband moving too, so I hope everyone has a great day!

The sad fate of husbands!
I did do a bit more on my tulips this morning before the household woke up but I’m not sure if I made things better. It really is a challenge trying to get the petals to look real enough to hold up to the vase.

March 23, 2013 at 12:27 pm #1197110Colin – squint at it, it’ll probably look tight then …… we often get too close to our subjects!
At least you didn’t have any visitors in the studio this morning! No good cracking the whip for my DH – Saturdays/Sundays are (this time of year) Grand Prix Racing and football (soccer to the uninitiated!)
I am doing my WDE this week on a BLACK b/g:D – I’ll let you see it when done …… so far, about 25 mins – another 10 should see it done!
Cheers, Maureen

It’s all relative. If I take off my glasses and step back 10 paces the whole thing is indistinguishable from a Rembrandt or the bottom of the pan after a breakfast fry-up.

March 23, 2013 at 1:22 pm #1197111Lololol – I love your turn of phrase Colin!
If you think you might like to see my small black/dark b/g WDE that took less than 40 mins, it’s over here.
I didn’t want to post in this thread because it’s a diff. ref. altogether!Cheers, Maureen

Colin- so you’re already squinting, then. Maybe keep the glasses on when you stand back to look. That’s one of the few times I lower mine to my eyes.
And I used cobalt (:music:a favorite:heart: ).
My camera and I do not see the same colors at night. The work I carry outside & photograph on top of concrete usually looks perfect but I am not patient. (That’s why I paint with acrylics, come to think of it . )Virginia & Susan, I know it was the ugly stage. I had to tell myself that, too!
I’ll get back to it a bit later.
