I use chalk or pastel pencil too for marking out – and I try to use a colour that is part of the painting …… having used a crimson pp at one time just to have it mix with the paint to an alarming degree and difficulty covering it! Live and learn – however old you are, it still applies!!!:lol:

haha thats what you get for trying to work from a tiny phone screen. Oh well i’ve started with 2 so I may as well finish with 2.
I haven’t moved forward with mine yet as I was coerced into eating out with work colleagues last night and by the time i got back to the hotel room i was plum tuckered and ready for bed.
Unlikely i’ll get much time over the weekend so I may stall now until Monday. These days I only get time to be creative while working away Mon to Fri as when I get home there is usually a list of jobs around the house with my name on them

Colin your vase is really well depicted (especially if you have corrected the line of beadwork) look forward to seeing your next step if you work more on the flowers.
Maureen you have achieved that luminosity filtering through the flower heads and that in conjuction with the great vase makes this a real stunner.
Bhavani, wow what a great way to enhance the ref, Van Gogh would be delighted to see this with it’s radiating energy.Please excuse my English - it is my first language and therefore i abuse it outrageously

Colin, looking good, so far!I’ve gotten mine started, my origional bg curled something terrible so I covered over an old, unloved painting & started over. It has texture running down one side which I designated as “left”. I covered with gesso, then painted black with some cobalt mixed in. Then I covered it 2 more times with black, then did a rough draft in color so I could place the subject. I covered over that with a wash mixed from metallic silver, cobalt & black then had my regular bg playtime.
I tried to behave…it’s subtle…for now

April – Now why am I not surprised about all the action with the b/g eh? sounds fun!:lol:Cindy – this is looking so very good – shapes and form already fine – not sure what help you need with the flowers, they’re already looking luminous. The only thing negative I can see is the glare taking away the contrast!:lol:

I love artistic license!! IF I was gonna ‘fix’ any of the flowers, I might add a bit of the ‘extra colors to the ones in back to dull down the blue just a bit…the blue one in front is just perfect..IMO. As for whether it works…it does!
Colin your vase is wonderful! I have a hard time balancing between realism and impressionism at times…so hard to know where to fix and when to stop, for me anyway!

Now Virginia, did you HAVE to mention that little piece of one?
Here’s where I ended up (so far…:lol:). I am frustrated with the photo or my editors…not sure which I have the prob with…sigh It looks great in the editor, but what saves is not the same…tried two, same result…so not sure what’s up. Seem to be having trouble getting the top purplish and the vase the beautiful vibrant blue that it is. Oh well…too much rain to try more for now. All I really did was mix some permanent green light and lemon yellow to make a lighter green and added a touch of white in it here and there, to bring up the highlights in the leaves, and TRIED to add a bit more glow with naples and lemon yellow, and toned down the davy’s gray with some pthalo blue. A bit more zinc white and that was it. Scumbled the ‘walls’ a touch around the vase handle and up by the one tulip to try and catch where the light seemed to be hitting.
I suppose I don’t need an excuse…but I’ve been under a bit of stress lately, and since painting is what keeps me centered, and as stress free as anyone ever gets….I started looking for something else to paint…going thru’ a ton of photos. Tho’ I found some interesting things, my mind kept coming back to this one, and the black canvas…and my mind just would not let up. I also found this stunning shot of some multi-colored tulips in a dark red and yellow stripey pattern…yummmy So I thought about artistic license…and then thought some more. I didn’t really want to duplicate the one I’d just finished, but did not want to stray from our project. So far, I’ve done a little creative meandering with it…:evil:

I started with emerald green, azo red deep, prussian blue, cad orange, and winsor violet to make my black…and just slathered it on. No pic, as nightime is not great here for photos… Then, almost before it was dry, I just jumped in with the paints. I used a mix of metalic paint on the vase…bronze and gold…emerald green and lemon yellow for the leaves, and azo red deep and lemon yellow for the tulips. I hated the pot, so I went back and scumbled some black and green and red into it, and it’s a bit better. Oh, and I flipped the ref photo…well actually I just did it in my head till today, as I’d already turned the pc off. Can’t believe I stayed up till after 1am doing this…:lol: maybe I have finally lost it?
Off to play with the vase/pot and flowers now, and decide if I am gonna change the bg any from just dark.

Sue – Wow! Like your changes a lot and the 2nd painting is amazing. The reds really pop against the dark blue bg. But you read my mind. I was thinking of changing the color of the flowers on mine so that they pop out more from the yellow bg.
Fantastic work by everyone. It is very interesting to see how different artists approach the same subject.

BhavaniI finally had some time to complete the black background, get mine drawn out (using white charcoal pencil) and begin on the blue background. Here is where I am so far:

Even though the black shows up a bit amber in color, it is truly black. I used Mars Black. My attempt at a turquoise blue for the background was a bit challenging because the color changed so much as it dried under the influence of the black beneath.
I hope to work on this tomorrow, so if you see something I need to fix, please let me know.
Colin, great beginning! Your vase is magnificent! And your leaves have great variety in their coloring. Good work! Like Maureen, I’d like a bit more variation in the blossom colors.
Cindy, your white blossoms glow and I really the like the green you’re using. You seemed to have captured the light in your painting. What a lovely finish!

Susan, you completed two paintings, each one uniquely lovely. I really like the red and yellow tulips and the reverse image in the second and the first one is superb!

After posting I can see that my leaves are too solid a clump. I’ll work on letting in some space and light tomorrow.
