I used a ‘carbon black’ from the great local artist’s supply store (ie not a name brand) that is only two blocks from my office. The website claims it is artist not student grade, so we will see.
Maureen will be pleased to know I used a house-painting brush. Thinned with a little water.

March 20, 2013 at 1:53 am #1197234Hehe, I saved this ref photo in my favourites several weeks ago- as a kind of goal, when I’m better in painting – hence, to paint it in aprox 6.5 yrs
At the moment I cannot quite imagine, how many layers you need, to build up the colors on a black bg, although I saw such paintings before. So I am very interested in seeing how you’ll all will develop this subjectBtw: I did a second version of the beach scene – tried to implement all your advice. Yesterday however I ruined it when doing the oats
must see, if I can do changes, otherwise I will maybe post it in order to show that I’ve worked on it.
And learnt: painting on canvas is sooo different to painting on paper, wow! That was so much fun to do…
(I painted on paper before and on canvas also, but not the same subject…)Wishing all of you a happy painting,

C&C welcome! Want to learn...

BhavaniMarch 20, 2013 at 7:07 am #1197099One of your Moderators in this forum painted this a few years ago – not me though ……. and not on black:)
Hoping to get started today – not sure of size yet – I’ll go rummage;)
Virginia – I hope that tractor didn’t damage anything!
Susan – I had a tub of W&N gel matt medium that did that to me – went all lumpy and impossible to use, whatever I tried – hope you have more luck.
Think I’m making my own ‘black’:)
Colin – success – I achieved success :smug: – you used a non-specific brush Yippee!!!!!!!
Cheers, Maureen

I’m not much for the matt look of the black gesso so i might add a layer of black acrylic to gloss over the surface before i lay in the subject. I’m going to try and go alla prima and get it finished all in one session rather than layering in glazes. It’s certainly going to give the opacity of my paint’s a run for its money. I wish i’d brought my acrylic gouache away with me for this one.
I’ve also just seen the different strokes challenge too, as today is the reveal date i might try to cram one of those in too
Please excuse my English - it is my first language and therefore i abuse it outrageously
March 20, 2013 at 7:31 am #1197217Susan- 20+ years ago when I was young & painted with oil, I had picked up a “flake white”. It was horrible-didn’t want to thin or spread, lumpy odd texture. I hope your 5 gallon bucket of black behaves slightly better
re: the paperclips-I do remember that we figured if it was ok to use more than one, many was also acceptable. If you have an unlimited supply of paperclips you can make: chainmail
I’m not sure how many I can remember but the first thing that pops into my head is a dog leash, lets see, trivet, ashtray(lined), necklace, rosary, bag, use instead of shoelaces, hair clip, plastic bag holder, clothes pin, shower curtain hangers…
there’s no stopping it, I’m like Bubba (Forrest Gump) with his many shrimp possibilitiesThere are specific brushes???
…maybe I should try doing it the “right way” sometime….

I always use pastel pencils. If the background is dark, then a yellow would fit. Yellow ocher is my favourite.

Live and learn – however old you are, it still applies!!!
Stee – glad you’re joining us and for the Diff. Strokes, you still have 11 days to post if you don’t get one done today:D
Daniel – welcome to the forum – are you joining us here too?:)

Fortunately the tractor didn’t do much damage. They were hired to dig out a new septic for my neighbor. The way our houses are numbered (we don’t have even or odds on the opposite sides of the street, the numbers are willy nilly, we don’t have stop signs even) he thought my house was the one he wanted. Good thing I was home to stop him! One time a company delivered my neighbors couch and put it in my garage. It was a bit disconcerting to come home and find a new couch in my garage where I normally park. I keep the garage locked now.
This is how I normally start with the paint. I just squeeze it on and spread it out. As you can see from my very clean table, I never make a mess.
After I let it dry, I used a white charcoal, you can also use a pencil if you have good eyesight (I don’t). You could also use your darkest color, in this case, a really dark green to paint in a sketch. Normally I don’t use anything (that takes a lot of practice) but did in this case I did so you can see it.
Then I started the background, it may seem like you need a lot of paint. But this is where painting on black is helpful because you can see where you normally don’t cover or use enough paint. I know when I started painting, I used little dabs of paint, little bits of paint because I was worried about wasting it. Now if I have paint left over, I either use it for another painting or mix it all up and tone some more canvases. I use a stay wet palette, I put antibacterial dishsoap in a flat sponge to prevent mildew, then put a layer of waxed paper on top of the sponge so the soap doesn’t mix with the paint. Then I put a piece of cheap watercolor paper on top of that. Use any container with a good lid and your paint will keep for a good long time.
I did the background fairly smooth for me. I may emphasis the light/dark parts more, and I completely ignored the line down original photo.
I’m also going to ignore or change the leaves that have odd shapes.Susan, I haven’t used flow release myself, so I don’t know if that would work! Hopefully you can salvage it though!
April Joy, in college our shower curtains were paperclipped. That lasted longer then you would think it would.
Mike, use whatever you can see! A white or yellow or red coloured pencil would work too if you don’t have charcoal.
Violetta, nice to see you!
Colin, I like carbon black, you could start a whole minimalist phase if you frame that.
Stee, sometimes the flat black depending on the subject works as well as a glossy. It’s a personal preference so go with whatever one you like best! I tend to paint all in one go, I’m trying to slow down so I can take photos.
Bhavani, it’s a challenge for sure, cant’ wait to see what you do!
Gaby, I’ll bet your painting looks better then you think! It’s interesting how different supports can affect how you paint, always fun to try something different with the same reference.
Hi Daniel and welcome, jump right in if you’d like.

Find me on FacebookMarch 20, 2013 at 12:09 pm #1197136Well…here’s what I have done so far…
I managed to get the canvas painted black… and then made a thin stripe of white for the edge of the wall using a yardstick. I decided I liked the juxtaposition of the walls and wanted to see if I could capture it…not sure whether that will help or hurt the focal point…but it can be changed if I don’t like it. Another reason I went with the way the wall was dividing the canvas was that golden mean/ration thing….the composition was actually near perfect in the way it was laid out, at least as far as the program I have, and the line seemed to play an integral part in capturing that…we shall see…a master painter I am NOT… But I figured it couldn’t hurt!
I ‘posterized’ the ref photo and was surprised at how many colors the program put in the walls…so I kind of went with that to a degree. I blended winsor violet, pthalo blue (green shade), cad orange (to dull the hues), and white at angles. Then I dry brushed on top to smooth it somewhat. Not totally sure if I like it for this bg, but was pleased with the effect.
Now I’m gonna sketch in the vase/pitcher and flowers and have at it…

Good thinking about the Golden Section SusanHave started – got my ‘black’ layered in using Indigo blue, Payne’s Grey and a Crimson (I think – will check) and will post first stage later …. have sketched in the basic shapes.
My intention is to use MUCH MORE paint than I normally do and keep it loose ……. we’ll see how much of that I achieve!Cheers, Maureen
Forum projects: Plant Parade projects in the Florals/Botanicals forum , WDE in the All Media Art Events , Different Strokes in Acrylics forum .March 20, 2013 at 2:27 pm #1197137Thanks, Virginia, and Maureen! Wish I had some indigo paint…sigh…I tried paynes and alizarin crimson last night on a ‘sketchy’ painting, but they kind of faded for me? Maybe because they are more transparent? I am so not good with any kind of color theory stuff…and always have to look up transparent and opaque stuff…
Once I start, I find I can’t stop… I sketched out the leaves and flowers and vase, with white charcoal, then outlined the vase in white. Used chromium oxide, cad yellow medium, and green/black to fill in most of the leaves and stems. The tulips are naples yellow light, cad orange and davy’s gray with a glaze of zinc white so far. The vase is pthalo blue and white…not sure I will lighten it, as I just LOVE that shade of blue…sigh…kind of a ”delftish” color tho’ the pattern is not. I have a few antique plates and such that were family cast-offs that I treasure because of the color. I like cobalt/ glassware as well…and this come close.
Now you can see that I moved the photo down just a tad, to keep the line in that ‘golden section’ coming right across the top of the vase…that moved the handle down with now looks a bit odd… I MAY just hint at a thin line of it at the very bottom…not sure yet.
