At one point in the process this had great potential and I overworked it. Yet I can’t bring myself to paint over it because of all the time invested. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Acrylic/metallic paint on canvas 16″x20″The essential thing, for me, is to offer a visual expression of those things in our experience that words cannot express www.jim-whalen.artistwebsites.comFebruary 21, 2018 at 1:02 pm #569992February 21, 2018 at 1:27 pm #569986somehow the belief you express of this being “overworked” makes no sense to me.
I find it unique, rich, loosely geometric
flowing and active
The colors are appealing to me, as is the compositional elements.
I think this has potential for sale, or at least for a special gift.So glad it exists

February 21, 2018 at 4:22 pm #569989Thanks for your words, Anthony, I value your artists eye.
Greggo, I said it’s overworked because it got away from me and became something other than what I intended. Now that kind of spontenaity is often a good thing, but in this case it just seems overwrought to me – too much texture, too much color, and too much structure. But, at the same time I like the basic concept and wanted some other opinions…I certainly value yours and Anthony’s (my spouse likes it too). I will probably keep it.

Put it aside for a week and it won’t look overworked to you anymore. It’s a nice size and will brighten up any space.

Christopher has a good idea. Turn it to the wall for a while, and when you come back I bet you will either want to wash the whole thing to create a unified and beautiful under painting for something more, add some smaller scale shapes to increase the interest and remove the two focal area competition, or sign it as is. No idea which. All three would work.

Stylistically not the same as the awesome stuff on your website, to be sure, but even so …
I think it has great color harmony and holds the attention. The texture suggests detail.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.
February 22, 2018 at 9:27 am #569984It needs to be up on a wall illuminating an entire room. Gorgeous and glowing gem of an abstract!!

February 22, 2018 at 11:14 am #569988Well I like it just the way it is. Greggo said it best. Not overworked at all.
Personally I would be tempted to add a few small rectangles within the lower rectangle, but that’s only because I have realist tendencies (which drive me crazy) and I’m imagining it as a building. Wonderful colors and texture!Art is never finished, only abandoned.-- Leonardo da Vinci
