I mostly use tube paint, but I am setting up several pan palletts for specific purposes,,, and I find even the full pans are a bit small for comfortable use. Does anyone know if larger than full size pans are available ? especially empty,,,Has anyone else solved this issue with a hack? I would love to find out other solutions,,,Thanks

July 10, 2018 at 3:15 pm #655937This may or may not work for you but I use two things for different purposes.
1. Small Jars
If I’m using a very limited palette and know I’ll be painting a lot with it I use small jars. I have some 42ml jars I cleaned out from a honey sample gift set. I don’t fill the whole thing (the amount/cost that would take! ) just enough to cover the bottom. Keeping the lids makes it especially useful for outdoor painting and travelling.2. Shells
I live quite close to the sea so shells are not too hard to get my hands on. I mainly use them to hold paint in for studio work. Smaller ones are individual pans, larger are mini-palettes in and of themselves. Picture below shows used indigo limpet and a new clam palette I just set up to test a four colour palette.[FONT="Book Antiqua"]Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/snowywren/July 10, 2018 at 4:09 pm #655924I am using KURETAKE GANSAI TAMBI pans, I had to remove the paint that comes with them, ( I actually am doing japanese watercolors so I just moved the paint into another set I had for that, so nothing is wasted ). They don’t have a lot of paint in them, but they are really inexpensive, so it works out to be about $1 a pan.
I then filled them with my paint, each holds about 10 mL of paint, perhaps a bit more, as I am not able to completely empty a tube of daniel smith, but there isn’t a lot left either. These are actually not very deep but then the goal here is to use bigger brushes, these are quite a bit larger.
I built this palette to hold them.
if you want larger, you probably want to look at ceramic dishes sold for serving sauces and the like, lot of them are designed for suchi and the like. These are not very expensive at some of the import/export stores.

July 10, 2018 at 4:35 pm #655929thanks all for chiming in,,, those “KURETAKE GANSAI TAMBI”, are close to what I was thinking, but what I pictured in my head was extra long pans that would still snap into traditional tins,,,I may cut some ends off and start gluing

A very ambitious project!
I use a Shinhan Aluminium palette. It has 36 slots (sloped pans) and are very large, much larger than standard full pans. I pour my tube paints and mix in a few drops of glycerin to keep the paint easy to reactivate.
It’s not very expensive either and the mixing areas are huge.

I’ll definitely keep an eye out for some, although it’s a bit problematic in Australia. You aren’t supposed to remove them from beaches, and you can’t bring them back into the country (quarantine laws) if you use them in your painting travel kit.
I might be tempted to skirt the first law a bit, but I daren’t the second! Perhaps I’ll just paint AT the beach, and rinse them out before I leave???!

July 18, 2018 at 5:10 pm #655932I think its going to be pretty good, each box has its own lid so colors can be switched out easily
