9.5×11 first time using Arches coming from Strathmore 400, a bit finicky but I do love the way it takes water
November 29, 2018 at 7:24 pm #737827Very atmospheric and nicely done. I think I might have used a color other than a flat grey for the smoke/clouds. Maybe Paynes Grey or indigo?

Lol ya there was a wall of a carrier back there that was grey and had a “75” stamped on the wall.. I sorta forgot about it and threw the grey all over…didn’t realize until I was done stood back and looked at it

Painting is not everything in life - but without painting everything is nothing!November 30, 2018 at 3:59 am #737820You have really cought the atmosphere here, but I think you have over done the intensity of the steam a bit. maybe a bit more transparent in places. The a/c wing on the left looks too thick. I think if you cropped the picture to just the Director and the a/c cockpit and fuselage it would be brilliant.
JimNovember 30, 2018 at 6:23 am #737828I agree with the crop. Aircraft looks like a Tom Cat.
November 30, 2018 at 6:04 pm #737825Ah you’re right Vegaskip I probably could have lopped a bit off the left as for the smoke I got carried away lol
Shadye yes I had to double check the reference and you’re right it’s a Tom cat haha!
Now how do you guys decide when or where to crop something before you paint it? Is that something you just learn over time?
Thanks for the CC guys much appreciated!

I would change this to portrait form as the focal point is the Director and the Cockpit (it would be better with some suggestion of the aircrew beneath the ‘bubble’)
I copied and cropped it to portrait as an example
Hope it helps, but it is your painting.
Jim
PS the ‘smoke’ is steam from the Catapult.

I watched some carrier landings after you replied to see this “catapult” it’s so cool plus I had to google wing AC as well no idea what you were talking about

I spent two years as Starboard Catapult Director (among other jobs) in HMS Victorious 1965/66.
