According to my optics physics prof, neither black nor white are colors.
But I think I may be ready to rejoin the challenge group
Gonna be very hard to get around the copyright issue tho. That foundation monitors all renditions of his fotos.October 3, 2018 at 12:14 am #703490Carl challenge ramblings and questions…..
There has been mention that there will be a need for “textures” in this challenge. Why?
Is very careful highlighting and watching tones/hues/mixing also required?
In looking at photos, is there lots of negative painting:eek: ? Is it good to think in terms of shapes, angles, squares, and really sharp edges?
Observation – It is amazing that in some black and white photos a sky can be hard black (yet clear in reality) or bright white yet clear (in reality).
Cheers
Carl
October 4, 2018 at 6:38 am #703456Simplify!!! – just like doing a grisaille!;) …….. not that grisailleaare al that simple – they’re as realistic as you care to make ’em!;)
Jim – glad you’re painting again – and yes, agree, black and white are actually a) the absence of all colour and b) the mixture of all colour- something like that anyway, but definitely not colour!;)
Cheers, Maureen

Q1. Texture can give the illusion of detail.
Q2. Yes.
Q3. I think “negative shapes” is a mind trick to get yourself thinking about shapes rather than objects. Thinking about an object can lead to portraying the stereotyped image that you carry around in your head; the tree that looks like a lollipop, the cotton ball clouds, the potato shaped rocks.
Q4. Yes, but don’t forget the soft edges also.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.
October 4, 2018 at 9:56 am #703515I have an idea for this, and I figured out how to combine it with the fantasy/sci fi challenge, so it’s going to be creepy.

Every painting is a new adventure.October 4, 2018 at 9:43 pm #703491Cliff – thanks for the helpful hints & tips.
Michelle – creepy sounds cool since we are in the month of ghouls and goblins!!! Maybe have it clinging to the walls of El Capitan in Yosemite :smug: .
Cheers

October 5, 2018 at 4:15 pm #703554so even thought black and white are not colors, grey or gray is a color, It is often referred to a “color with no color”.
October 5, 2018 at 7:57 pm #703598So I guess this means that the true color of titanium white is “none.” Or maybe “notacolor?”
The evidence of our senses says that black and white are colors. Middle school science teachers are fond of telling us otherwise, based on the way a prism breaks up the visible spectrum.

October 5, 2018 at 8:54 pm #703555Visible light, radio waves, x-rays and other types of radiation are all part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from roughly 400 and 700 nanometers. In physics, a color is visible light with a specific wavelength. Black and white are not colors because they do not have specific wavelengths. Instead, white light contains all wavelengths of visible light. Black, on the other hand, is the absence of visible light.

If you see one you like, click on it and a page with a bigger image and a downloadable file will come up.Wikimedia ~ Ansel Adams, public domain photos (click here)

This isn’t physics.

October 6, 2018 at 9:30 am #703564Well I’m one third of the way through and just realised that I have only used black with varying amounts of water! Are you envisaging a nothingness? The black hole? There is ….something but it certainly needs cheering up with some white light. Swimming against the technical tide here and enjoying being a happy, old zebra.
Serious question: may we add silver highlights?:confused:Through striving, to the stars.
October 6, 2018 at 11:27 am #703442I’ve the same question. Are we allowed to use diluted black for instance for a pale gray or grey, or are we limited to black & white only?
