Yes Fede – we’re trying to avoid any copyright issue at all – it’s always a nightmare!

October 1, 2018 at 9:02 pm #703479Yikes! This means, tons of texture! I’m really texture-illiterate and can never duplicate them – one of my great weaknesses. I’ll try but not sure. . . I suppose the tremendous challenge is worthwhile, though.

October 1, 2018 at 9:18 pm #703593Nice Challenge.. was checking the images today and they seem to have Copyright… anyway as I see the challenge is in the style of… so any Black & White image
Making a painting in the style of is the better option in my opinion. However, all of the images I checked at the National Archives are unrestricted. If you want to use one, here is how to check its usage status. Just for reference, the Archives page for Ansel Adams looks like this …
Once on this page (Carl’s link should take you right to it) scroll down to the list of photos. They look like this …
Notice the item reference number on the left. It’s a link to the detailed information page for the photo. Once the page opens, scroll down until you see this …
Notice that, for this image, access and use are both unrestricted. No restrictions, therefore okay to use it as a reference for painting.
These photos are a product of the United States Government; specifically the National Park Service. The NPS commissioned Adams to take these photos for a proposed mural.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.
October 1, 2018 at 10:01 pm #703488Thank you all for willing to jump in and try this challenge!!!
Cliff thanks. This is exactly why I added that link. It was checked well before posting to ensure that all could use. However, you all need to go with your gut feeling on what is the appropriate image(s) to use in this challenge. Or, use none at all and create one:) . The instructions now leave that wide open. Have fun.

October 2, 2018 at 10:29 am #703513Last month we were challenged with cool colours, this month with no colours. I think the key here is to find an image with strong contrast.
C&C always welcome. Michelle

Here’s a link to a Wikipedia article that discusses Adams’s system for evaluating contrast and exposure values. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_System

October 2, 2018 at 2:16 pm #703596Never doubted that it was checked for a minute. Just made my post so others could verify for themselves.
