My Blog/WIP's and Tips: Chammi's Art EscapadesMarch 31, 2018 at 6:41 pm #573102Thank you so much for the comments, Pine Cone! I do hope you’ll give it a try. There are some wonderful tutorials over in the Scratchboard forum, and as with anything, it’s all about practice. It is a lot of fun. Addicting, even.
Thank you, Phranque!
Thanks very much, Chammi. Glad you’re enjoying the WIP.

March 31, 2018 at 11:16 pm #573103I’ve been kind of experimenting with the background. The three twigs are puzzling me. Should I continue to develop them? I can’t decide if they work in this composition or not. This has been a learning process. I’ve also continued working on the tree bark. The extreme texture of bark is fun to recreate in scratchboard.
C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

April 5, 2018 at 12:13 am #573105Posting some more progress on this. I’m planning to get the tree bark all blocked in before giving in to working on the nuthatch. That will be fun! I’ve also changed the composition of the distant branches a little bit. C&C welcome. Thank you for looking!
Here’s a close-up to show some of my textures. I’m still using a #11 X-Acto knife for the detailed work, and steel wool and a fiberglass brush for the softened background.

April 7, 2018 at 10:22 pm #573106Finally, I’ve gotten the tree bark all blocked in. All those abstract shapes have been interesting to work with. I still need to enhance the lighter areas to make things pop. Then onto the bird. I’ve also taken a Faber-Castell Pitt pen and given the right edge of the tree texture and roughness. I’ve been looking forward to doing that since I began. It’s not too far from done now.
C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

April 15, 2018 at 1:24 pm #573107Here’s probably my last WIP update before showing the finished artwork. I’ve finally begun working on the nuthatch, and what fun that has been! The feathers of any bird are a masterpiece of shape, form, and markings, so it’s really been a challenge to try and get them accurate in this piece. The white head has been fun. There’s something about the shape and markings of nuthatches that make me think of sea birds. I’ve also added more contrast to the bark and have smoothed out the softened background a little more.
Thanks for checking in. As always, C&C welcome.

May 3, 2018 at 8:15 pm #573108I’ve finally completed and sprayed this piece! The nuthatch was a joy with all those textures and patterns in the feathers. I haven’t drawn many birds, so this one was a nice step outside my comfort zone. I also worked on the contrast in the tree bark and smoothed the softened background further. It’s good to have this piece finished at last. Looking forward to my next project.
C&C welcome. Thank you for looking and for following me with this WIP!:)
Some close-ups.

May 7, 2018 at 6:34 am #573090That turned out fantastic! The high contrast of the bird and the bark to the soft background is very effective.
Critiques and comments are always welcome.
