Hi Jan. I’m sure you can post away on this thread. I think this is for all the November weeks.
As for me, sorry, I’ve fallen by the wayside, lost momentum and have a big project which is taking all my time (it is still a pastel painting though). This challenge has been invaluable to me. It’s helped to teach me to loosen up a bit and not take my work, or myself, so damn seriously! For that I thank you very much Deborah and every one else who has inspired me!My website http://ruthmannpastelart.com/

November 16, 2009 at 6:11 pm #505935Hi Jan,
As Ruthie said post here for November .I intend to post week 3 as soon as I get enough light to photograph my last one.
I looked on your blog and I really like your blue painting of your week one.

November 16, 2009 at 6:38 pm #505973Thank you, Mary. My blog is really for non-artist friends, so there’s a lot of strange stuff on it….showing processes, ect.
For this challenge, I am trying to do as many things different as possible and make this process valuable. By the way, did you put yours in a gallery format before posting? I see they are side by side with white in between. I can’t believe I’m having so much trouble with this. Maybe it’s because I use a Mac. Right now I could post all three paintings, but they would just be stacked one on top of another, because I just can’t seem to clearly understand the process. My son said, just shoot them side by side and send it in as one picture, but it seems that’s not really solving the problem and with the dimension requirements, they would be rather small since they are horizontal paintings. Any ideas besides getting a new brain?CMD Fine Art - Jan Chiaramonte
November 17, 2009 at 6:38 pm #505974I’ve decided just to post the first week (3). I have one done for week two. And I’ll be in SF this weekend, so I hope being a Mac expert he’ll get me creating a gallery.

November 18, 2009 at 12:23 am #505975Thank you, Nancy. I thought as I was working I had chosen a design that was too complcated………but, I see that as I move on, I’m simplifying….another good lesson! My last message was a little confusing. I’ll be in SF to visit my son (the architect/webmaster with 3 websites of his own), daughter-in-law and my first grandchild!!! Yeah! It will only be the second time I’ve see her, but my son sends DAILY pictures from his iPod!

November 20, 2009 at 10:30 pm #505907I decided to jump in with 100 portraits after a painting I had done a few years ago. The first eight are on a warm gray Strathmore paper and the last one is a white sheet from a canson pad. All the approaches vary and I tried to use different color combinations than what I would normally use. Another goal in this first set was to limit the number of pastels to 4-7 colors and a completion time of 15-25 minutes.

9November 21, 2009 at 11:38 am #505898Mike, so glad you decided to jump on board. I’ll be interested to hear what conclusions you come to from this experiment. I have trouble imagining how one might paint a portrait so many different ways, but that’s likely because I have such limited experience of doing them. As I look at these first few I already see how the color and contrast, as well as the development of features (or not), affects the emphasis, expression and mood.

Gouache BlogNovember 21, 2009 at 12:18 pm #505908I really spent a lot of time pondering exactly what I wanted to do with this project…In my classes some of my students had started the “100” project with a small still life and and I actually had one picked out to do but thought it might be more fun with the portrait. The first few were mostly to see how the Strathmore paper would work for me and limiting my choices of color to just a few sticks….actually ended up by just trying to get the right “value” regardless of the color.
After I started, I also began wondering just how many ways could this be done:)November 22, 2009 at 8:38 pm #505938Mike,
It is very interesting to see the differences in the first 9 portraits I must say I am running out of steam as I approach 40!
Welcome to the thread and I look forward to seeing your next set.

November 23, 2009 at 1:43 am #505905Jancee, all three of these are interesting. I particularly like No.3. I don’t normally like monochromes but I am finding that I am more and more drawn to them as I see them in this challenge. The use of pastels in No.2 give a light, ahppy look, and your colour combination in No. one, although it is muted, still has a lot of light.
Mary, how different these all look. Particularly like No. 32 and then 30 the best. Also love last weeks gallery (sorry I haven’t commented before). That beach scene is great, and you have such different moods in all of them.
Mike, Just wonderful. Just shows how different moods can be achieved with limited palettes.
Sorry I’ve not been around. I’ve been ill with bronchitis so have decided to give up soft pastels and so this challenge.
Deborah, this has been an interesting challenge, so thank you for that. I have learnt quite a lot which I can take over into my other media. I’m giving oil pastels a try, and might challenge myself to do the same with those.
I shall keep lurking to see the interesting work that’s beeing done.
C&C always wanted and thanks for looking. Marion
