Hi guys,
I endedup buying an #8 and #12 Trekell kolinsky brushes. I can’t afford Raphaels or Davincis in those sizes. I got these when they were running a promotion, and I put some of my other brushes on the photo just for comparison. I took a photo when they were drying…
Just a disclaimer – I don’t work for Trekell, I do not have any financial gain by talking about their product.

We must leave our mark on this worldJune 22, 2012 at 6:57 am #1165892Wow, that 12 is very plooshy. How do you like painting with them? Do they retain their points nicely? No splitting? I have a little kolinsky that I have to twirl in the palette every time I refill it to reform it’s point.
PS: I love those Neptunes.

so far so good.,,,I got these larger brushes because I was watching a charles reid flower DVD and his books, it seems he only uses sables, he recommends at least a 8, and a larger size for the future …However it seems he uses davincis.I really like the feel of sable on paper. And I want to paint half sheets.
I’m still testing and doing his exercises, getting used to handle sables the charles reid way, but so far the 8 has a good point, and the 12 also does too.IN the future when I start doing some decent watercolors and out of the initial learning phase I’ll post them here.
I’m finally being able to little by little stock up art materials, learning more techniques trying to get caught up with painting again.Monica
June 24, 2012 at 10:00 pm #1165894So for those of us that just can’t afford sable, where do we go from here. Right now I am using Grumbacher Assorted Natural Hair and I would love to upgrade a few, but to what. Does anyone use Dick Blicks? I just read a thread on OX hair and they didn’t seem like the way to go.
I have been reading all about brushes and well…
I am so confused
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While sable brushes are nice, they are hardly essential. In the scheme of things, they may be the least important tool for watercolor painting, IMO.
Good quality nylon brushes, for example, will perform wonderfully. With care, they will last a long time, and because they are economical, can easily be replaced when points stop pointing! Lots of threads here on WC about the different nylon brush manufacturers.
This isn’t a knock on sable brushes at all. It’s only a response to a question. Hope this helps.

Blick is awesome! One of my favorite places to buy art supplies.
For those of you who can’t or don’t want to spend the money on genuine sable brushes, I recommend Dynasty “Faux Kolinsky” Series 1114 brushes. They are a reasonably priced synthetic that behaves very much like real sable.
They are available from Blick and Jerry’s Artarama too.

http://www.WalcottFineArt.comJune 26, 2012 at 1:29 pm #1165891I like to show this to people who ask why art is so expensive:
Artwork does not become "Art" until someone buys it... until then, it's just an obsession... and a storage problem.
I welcome constructive critiques and comments from anyone and anywhere.
My websiteJune 27, 2012 at 12:21 am #1165895When I get past my beginner class I might start buying a good brush a year or something. Still not sure there will be too many sable brushes in my life. For now, I will stick with my OX/Pony brushes, they seem to be serving me pretty well at my level.
Thanks everybody!

June 27, 2012 at 11:30 pm #1165901Marietta, for those of us who can’t afford sable…Me included (smiles):)
The Trekell Kolinsky #8 was almost $26, with the 20% coupon they were running at the time it cost me less than that.
Other brands are more expensive. A #8 WN series 7 is almost $90 which I’d love to have, but can’t.I’m a starving graphic artist and now a starving artist eheheh. I have to save money for art materials I like to have.
Kolinsky brushes are NOT a requirement for watercolors.
There are a lot of mixes and synthetics that will perform just as well.I just wanted to show these Trekell kolinsky because they were cheaper.
I thought maybe someone would like to see a photo.Monica
June 28, 2012 at 8:26 am #1165896Thanks Monica,
That is a better price than I had seen on any of the sables so far. Not bad. Perhaps I will save my pennies and treat myself to a Trekall.

June 28, 2012 at 10:39 am #1165899I use both natural hair and synthetic but I can’t resist the search and purchase of a brush that looks good when someone else is using it.
My latest purchase resulted from a video on a local TV channel (same channel and the same guy who interviewed JZ).
