Do you love ’em or loathe ’em? Petsonally I love them, both to look at/forage for and to eat, yum. Anyway an exhibition of the humble mushroom, wish I was closer I’d love to visit.

I wouldn’t dare eating wild mushrooms; I don’t know how to tell the poisonous ones from the edible ones. But as long as I get them in a reputable supermarket I’m happy to pig out on them. :-)

I really like ‘shrooms and do enjoy searching for them in the wild, but I only know morels, corals, and owl’s head. I know what some of the others look like but I’m not sure enough of them to eat them. :)

I only eat mushrooms in home made fettucinne Alfredo, the occasional English breakfast or chicken and mushroom pie, I never buy or eat them apart from that.

I love mushrooms, not just to eat but also to look at and forage for. There are so many shapes and sizes. I remember being with friends in Poland and foraging in the forest, my friends really knew their stuff and picked one sort for drying, one to be pickled in vodka several sorts to eat, it was really interesting , not to mention yummy.
I also love to see botanical drawings of them

A few years ago, an understanding friend in China told me, “A bunch of us are going to pick mushrooms on the mountain Saturday. You come and just bring your paints.”

                                Overnight, very
                                Whitely, discreetly,
                                Very quietly
                                Our toes, our noses
                                Take hold on the loam,
                                Acquire the air.
                                Nobody sees us,
                                Stops us, betrays us;
                                The small grains make room.
                                Soft fists insist on
                                Heaving the needles,
                                The leafy bedding,
                                Even the paving.
                                Our hammers, our rams,
                                Earless and eyeless,
                                Perfectly voiceless,
                                Widen the crannies,
                                Shoulder through holes. We
                                Diet on water,
                                On crumbs of shadow,
                                Bland-mannered, asking
                                Little or nothing.
                                So many of us!
                                So many of us!
                                We are shelves, we are
                                Tables, we are meek,
                                We are edible,
                                Nudgers and shovers
                                In spite of ourselves.
                                Our kind multiplies:
                                We shall by morning
                                Inherit the earth.
                                Our foot’s in the door.

I love mushrooms and we eat a lot of them. They are excellent in meat sauces, whether British meat pies, Italian pastas, or Asian stir fries. They are also excellent as a substitute for meat when vegetarians are in the building. Stuffed mushroom caps make great appetizers.

I myself wouldn’t pick them in the wild. In fact a young local child died a year or two ago from eating mushrooms his mum had picked on the boulevard in front of their home. Really tragic. But we have friends who are naturalists and who do forage in the woods, and collect chanterelles.

I only pick a few varieties like chanterelles and boletes (Porcini). Here’s one nice find held by a friend after a successful hunt.
