A recent monarch I just completed. While happy with the butterfly, I am not real sure of the background.
Any thoughts or C&C appreciated.
Thanks for looking.
SacandagaladyJuly 15, 2018 at 10:31 pm #658479I like your butterfly well done.
But they are usually flying in and amongst flowers and leaves.perhaps use your yellow coloured surround to become a flower and the green, perhaps more definition to make it greenery… leaves, or lawn or whatever you had in mind.
Good job !

Painting is jealous, and requires the whole man to herself. Michael AngeloJuly 16, 2018 at 5:42 am #658471Well done. Lovely butterfly and I like your soft diffuse background which makes it stand out.
I take Merrieweather’s point about butterflies being close to flowers but be careful not too lose your lovely Monarch. I would be inclined to wet the green area and drop in just a hint of colour to indicate flowers here and there. Needs to be diffuse and very much in the background; our imagination will do the rest.

July 16, 2018 at 12:29 pm #658472Your butterfly is lovely. I agree with Mike about wetting the background to drop some darker colors into both the green and the yellow. Just a hint of a petal here and of leaves there will make a difference.

July 16, 2018 at 5:30 pm #658478I think the background of green is alright but that you should make the flower the butterfly is sitting on more distinct. Not enough to overpower the butterfly but less blurred than you have it now. You’ve done a wonderful job on the butterfly.

Thanks for the helpful hint and for the appreciation! i appreciate you both responding and giving me feedback.
Here is an updated version of the original. Might still add a stem to the flower/leaf.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I worked the background even more than the the first redo and am quite pleased with how it “finally” came on out.
The butterfly was not altered at all.
Thanks again for your encouragement,
