i dont know if it makes a difference, but i use very thin oil paint. i thin it a lot with paint thinner or mineral spirits. when i varnish the entire painting with mod podge, its mainly to keep the wax paper from peeling off.

June 4, 2003 at 6:34 pm #1010823Hey Eric,
I went to your web site and I think your stuff is great! The deadsquid thing is a little weird but what the h— LOL.
Please don’t think I am trying to tell you what to do – but…… (1) Mod Podge is water based (as is acrylic medium) and (2) it recommends ‘to eliminate tackiness, apply clear acrylic sealer over dried Mod Podge’.
I know that the Acrylic Matte Medium might be a little more expensive – but in the long run (you really would only need one good coat) I think you would be better off using it. OK – now I am getting off my soap box………hope I have not offended.
Good Luck

June 4, 2003 at 6:45 pm #1010824And after revisiting your site – I see that numerous works say they are ‘oil, acrylic and wax paper on canvas’……and you are showing in galleries.
Are you kidding about the Mod Podge?? You are obviously experienced – I can’t believe you you would use a craft item on your art. What’s up????

June 4, 2003 at 6:53 pm #1010840im dead serious about mod podge, i really love the stuff. im only 21 so i dont have a lot of knowledge on the longevity of the different materials. polyurithane was mentioned earlier in this thread, i was wondering if maybe i should put that over the painting when done. i dont know. hte mod podge does get in the oil paint while painting, but as i said before, i dont apply the paint thick at all, very thin washes. i would use acrylic, but when thinned, it just rolls off the wax paper.

June 4, 2003 at 6:58 pm #1010841there is somewhat of a story behind the deadsquid, i guess it is kinda weird, but oh well.

June 4, 2003 at 9:20 pm #1010825OK Eric – giving up now…………I went to your site again and looked more. I really have to say your work is rather overwhelming. I guess your apparent naivete is misleading.
If the Mod Podge works for you and it must – please don’t let anyone talk you out of it. I only think you should get some expert advice on what to use as a final varnish that will be archival to preserve your art.
Have you considered that these pieces could be worth a great deal of money some day? You wouldn’t want them to deteriorate on you before that happens.
Why don’t you post in the Oil Painting forum and the Acrylics forum also (since some of your art includes acrylics) – include more pieces so people can see better what your talent is. They might not bother to go to your site.
Admittedly, some people don’t identify with abstract art….but it looks to me like you have alot of natural talent. Don’t let anyone discourage you!!!!! And please do type slower or use the spell check LOL.
And…..I would like to know the story behind the dead squid if you feel like sharing.

She never seemed shattered; to me, she was a breathtaking mosaic of the battles she had won. - Matt BakerJune 5, 2003 at 5:59 pm #1010843deadquid… well when i started painting, like a lot of teenagers, i was very into salvafor dali and surrealism. so i would try and do surrealistic paintings, but htat got old after a while. and i started watching these shows on the giant squid on tv and it was very interesting. i still enjoyed surrealism, but wanted to do somehting a little different. i noticed that a very common image that is used when trying to make a surrealistic piece is the “eye” i know people who just draw eyes all the time and morph and blend them into eachother, and make several eyes. there are just eye balls everywhere. so i started painting squids, because the giant squid has the largest eye of all creatures. so in a way my squid paintings were a tribute to surrealism, and at the same time an attack on cliches. after a while i started to explore more with my art, and slowly turned towards mixed media and collage paintings. my last squid painting i did was last year, it was a dead squid, one with his “arms” cut off and bleeding. so deadsquid is sort of like a turning point in my painting, the end of one erra and beginning of another. im going threw the same hting again now, changing from my “paintings to make you feel” to my new series of portraits which i htink will be called “1,001 words”

June 9, 2003 at 8:22 am #1010827Hi Eric,
I really enjoyed seeing this piece and veiwing the work on your site. Beautiful work, so much flow, texture and smooth, soothing palettes..
Keep it up!:D* I use the acrylic gel on my collages, and it has worked great to date. I had used mod podge on my first couple pieces but I find the gel applies smoother, dries clear .
