As someone who’s been drawing off and on for a long time, I’ve decided to start practicing seriously to get better. The sketches in this thread definitely won’t be daily, but as often as I can find time. Most if not all will be from various drawing prompt challenges I’ve found online.
The prompt for the first one is ‘an article of clothing’. The reference picture was found on a royalty free site.

April 10, 2018 at 10:13 pm #602545Oh very nice, I did a study of fabric tonight myself, things hanging on my door by hooks. I like what you have here, keep at it, the more you do the more you will improve. Recently really been working on improving myself, started with easy stuff to build confidence, then working on harder stuff.

If I may, I would implore you to draw from life with these kind of subjects – or indeed whenever it is possible. You mention drawing prompts, and the topic of this one. I feel it would have been a better use of your time to throw an item of your clothing on the floor, or over a chair and worked from that. Photos and reference have their place, but to use them effectively, you need to have a firm grasp and familiarity with drawing from life. It really is the only way to understand three dimensional form, and all the subtle complexities of light and shade, bounce and cast etc…
Draw from life as often as you can, and I promise things will click into place and resonate throughout your work far quicker. You may not always initially understand why you suddenly got better, but it will happen more frequently. From my experience and those around me, there’s no such thing as a “learning curve” when it comes to creativity. It comes in spikes – some big and some small – but never a smooth curve.
Hope this helps, and I look forward to your updates.

Sketch-BlogApril 26, 2018 at 12:20 pm #602549Thank you everyone! I will try to practice more often, and from life when possible. Sketching daily would be ideal, it’s definitely a goal of mine.
April 26, 2018 at 1:01 pm #602550This is actually a sketch from life inspired by the prompt “Seashell”. Graphite on sketch paper, photo taken with camera. The shell came from a souvenir shop ages ago.
