    Thanks Anettam Mindy, JJ, Uschi.

I’ve sketched another version from Wednesday’s photo and will post it as another thread.

Doug, very nice. You must have the patients of a saint to add so much detail.
I look forward the next one.

I really haven’t, that’s the truth, Jim. I do take care in getting the outline drawing right before I start, but the stone, brick and tile details are just bashed on. This is hard for me, as after a lifetime on the drawing board ‘m inclined to want to get everything absolutely accurate. The whole thing took around 4 hours start to finish in 3 sessions.

Just done another ink drawing of the cottage and it took around an hour. Main washes will go on quickly, then bricks, stones etc with a flat brush and finally a few more touches with the pen. may post it as a sort of WIP.

Doug, I really enjoy these ink and wash studies that you’ve been doing… The detail is phenomenal… Like Uschi, I liked the first version and then when you added the shadows, I was just amazed at the difference… The vignette really suits these paintings, as well…

 Instead of fighting your inclination… go with it! Have fun with it! You’re producing such beautiful work!

What Char said. Doug, the detail is wonderful. And you haven’t overdone it. This may be one of my favorites you’ve done. And you didn’t make any ink booboos! That alone would have killed me!

I, too, love these buildings, Doug, and always look forward to the next one. Please keep them coming.

I think it’s charming Doug! I also think the shadows have softened the brickwork just enough. Lovely work, one of your best!

I was thinking precisely that…but Uschi already said it :)

The persepctive on the window on the side seems a bit off–but it might be the scan.

Amazing that that house is that old–it doesn’t really look it.

You’re right Olga. The window is a bit wonky :D

I’ve put it right on my new version.

 I love your painting Doug, it looks even better now the shadows are in. You are very brave to sit and paint this as i know how busy this area is! I also like the way you have handled the foliage, I know from experience how difficult that can be!!!!

Very well done Doug. Hope your wrist feels good after that drawing :D. I agree the glass variation would make it look even better(for example the lower window glass is fairly dark with whites in it) but just addition of shadows itself has given a charm to this work.

love the work done on rocks :). Looking forward to WIP next time

Beautiful painting Doug! I particularly like the texture and detail in the stone wall. Just as you had ‘coaxed’ me into bringing one of my paintings alive by adding shadows, yours did the same.

                                        Doug,
I would like to see those shadows darker. You did a nice job with the drawing. Don’t be afraid to be bold with the painting. Look at your reference photo and see the variety in the windows. Reflections will be different in each one. We learned in classes to keep that same variety in our paintings. I believe it will greatly improve what is a great “start.” I would also make the tree on your left, next to the doorway, a little fuller. It is reading very thin. It sounds like I am ripping up your work. I’m not…just trying to help you make a good work even better.

Doug, I like it better with the shadows. Great pen and wash work, and the prespective is good after seeing your reference picture. You have put some charm in it, and I like that!
