Hi all!
This is a small 6″x 4″ pastel and watercolor. I’ve been working a lot in watercolor, but after so many years with pastel, I get aggravated with the color shift and lack of opacity when that’s the effect I want. I’ve also used gouache, but can’t afford to buy much of that these days.So I’ve been using pastel as watercolor, or with watercolor, sometimes wetting the sticks and applying it with a brush. This one, I also scumbled over parts of the leaves. I think the ratio is about 70% pastel. Karen, feel free to kick me out if this isn’t “pastely” enough!
May 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm #629771This is so gorgeous, Kris, and a wonderful way to show how versatile pastels can be! The colors are so vibrant and it’s such a visual treat to see the pastel areas on top of the watercolor areas. I hope you’ll be doing more like this! Pastely … yeah, that’s a real word in my vocabulary too!
May 28, 2018 at 2:10 pm #629772Wow! Wow! Wow! This wonderful wc/pastel abstraction of the lotus is something new and beautiful. It is much looser than you usually paint and the colors just sing. I think you are on to something here. I’ll let you stay….if you give us more.

I also use Windsor and Newtown watercolor marker often combined with pastel.June 1, 2018 at 11:30 am #629773I DID write a reply…I don’t know what happened to it..I DID, I DID (probably forgot to “submit”).
Thank you Donna! Pastels are crazy versatile, and even though its been a long time since I got “dusty” I still remember the colors. I’ll be “watercoloring” (that goes with “pastely”) something and want to deepen or highlight a color, and remember there’s a very deep blue aquamarine Schmincke that I love…and spend the next twenty minutes hunting around for it). Ugh all of you organized people!
Ok Karen, since I though I’d replied to this, I HAVE been working on MORE MORE MORE! I’ll post in a minute…
Thank you for the warm welcome back Ditte, and thank you for mentioning my flowers! It’s only a matter of time before I start doing flowers again, still love ’em! I’ll have to look at watercolor markers…if you see this post, tell me how you use them? Like water soluble pencils? Oh no, something else to spend nonexistent money on…:(
