I use this thread to post my Gouache Related pieces and you are free to critique or give tipps on how to improve things. I use this Medium since Dec 2020 so i have still a long way to really being able to Handle it how i want to.
I use the Horadam Gouache from Schmincke mixed with the Horadam Watercolors i bought before which i mix with the Gouache White to expand my color Range since i only bought the Prime Tubes for now.

February 27, 2021 at 9:20 am #1387673Nice paintings, Appo, I really like their fanciful and humorous quality.
I also think that gouache is a perfect medium for this kind of illustrations.February 27, 2021 at 3:13 pm #1387758its kinda working out for me right now but i cant say if acryl or oil might be something for it too since i never really gave it a real try when it comes down to acryl and not at all with oil. watercolor alone on the other hand would work too i guess but i am so used to be able to paint light on dark from digital stuff that its giving me a hard time just sticking to it so there comes gouache in, filling that gap.
still a lot to learn with it (which is one of the reasons i am here)but for now i am happy with the medium.

March 1, 2021 at 2:04 am #1388185I think oil is not particularly suitable for this kind of works, but who knows? Some people can do nearly everything with oil (not me). Acrylics could be an alternative, but some characteristics of gouache are unsurpassed: opacity, luminosity, details, beauty of the painted surface (acrylics tend to look like plastic when you stack many layers). One downside is fragility, your gouache paintings really need to be treated carefully.
March 1, 2021 at 2:21 am #1388186I don’t consider gouache paintings to be any more at risk than watercolours or pastels. obviously, you wouldn’t want to get water on them. I have lots of gouache paintings kicking around with no problems.

In my view, watercolours, pastels and gouache are all “fragile” – gouache even a bit more than watercolors (they can crack and detach if you bend the paper too much). They all suffer from any mechanical stress, acrylics are much more resistant in that. But I agree with you: if you keep them properly, they can last centuries.
March 8, 2021 at 11:21 am #1390452I wouldnt call ti fragile but thats something someone has to decide for himself. as long as it doesnt smear when i touch it is fine for me and at the end its nothing you otherwhise bend or so that you have to fear to crack it.
