What size leather cord do you use in your jewelry designs? I want to order some, but I’m not sure whether I want the 1mm or 2mm diameter.

EtsyJune 18, 2003 at 8:09 pm #1011836Hi Alex, I use both (helpful, eh?). I think 2mm is more the traditional leather cord look that’s popular right now though if that helps. I use 1mm for tiny delicate necked folks (like my sister) and 2mm for everyone else (like me, and DH).

doggies!June 18, 2003 at 9:18 pm #1011835I use the 2mm rolled Greek Leather cord. Don’t buy the leather from India, it bleeds on your neck!
June 18, 2003 at 9:23 pm #1011837I started out with leather several years ago and went to stringth for a more delicate look. RioGrande carries it. It’s a synthetic twisted cording and strong as all get out. Once you tie a knot, it stays tied and it comes in a size perfect to fit through double bead cups. I use it for everything; necklaces, bracelets and anklets. Check it out.

Ellen Alive BlogJune 18, 2003 at 10:08 pm #1011846Hi Alex, I use both also 2mm and 1mm. The Greek leather is nice. Some times double the strands of 1mm and it really looks neat that way also. Good luck.

Ok, now I have another question. I want to string one large bead onto the leather for a man. How do I deal with the two ends? Do I knot them? Do I put a clasp on it? If I do a clasp, how do I attach the clasp to the leather?

What I do depends upon how ‘finished’ a look I (or the client) wants the necklace to have. For a very nice casual look, I tie adjustable knots. I love those! For a more polished look, I go with the sterling end cap crimps. Some have just a loop on them (to which I add my own clasp) and some have a built-in hook and eye thing going on.
Both are nice options, IMO.

I remembered it because I just LOVED Gwacie’s necklace. There are several ideas and links.

I am making a mushroom bead following Emily’s tutorial and am going to string it on a leather cord for a Deadhead friend of mine. Hope he likes it!

I’m just now firing up the kiln, and am going to try my first mushroom AND my first Kim Miles Bangle Bead today! I’ve been really sick for a couple of weeks and too shaky to torch.

So glad you’re feeling better Tink! Ya gotta be pretty miserable to not be able to torch! It’s been very weird. Sore throat, achy… Very flu-like. I take Nyquil or Benadryl and sleep it off for a day or so. Then I feel better. After a day of working, I’m sick again. Very annoying.
I’m starting to wonder if it’s some kind of reaction to basement mold or something. Strange.
Maybe it’s monkey pox. I also have a hive-like rash that waxes and wanes… Chills, sweats, shaky hands.
Gini Porritt gave me a 3 LPM concentrator to piggyback with the 5 LPM one I already have, and though it’s hooked up I haven’t even been able to torch to try it out.

Thanks! Lulie
May 3, 2004 at 11:59 am #1011825For men, I like the sliding knot clasp that way they don’t have a piece of metal on the back of the neck. In fact for cording the sliding knot is really the neatest thing and “cheap” too!
Hope you feel better Tink, my problem is I have gotten soft over these months of building our Ranch, I just sit on my ass all day long and do nothing but think, and I am wondering how hard it is going to be for me to get back into the swing of things. Once my workshop is all setup I think it is going to take me a while to be able to work for more than 2 hours a day hehe, I got used to naps….and I don’t have a bed at the Hacienda…hehe, I better start doing something…soon!
