I currently have an older model Ipad Mini 4 and Dollar Store bag of styluses . I use the iPad mostly on the internet and as a book reader.
I also like to use it to do sketches from life, to plan paintings and to rework painting ideas (see examples below). I would like to upgrade to a larger Ipad with the Apple Pencil, hoping to make sketching easier: more refined point and larger drawing surface. I want to retain compatibility with Artrage. Any suggestions about which Ipad Pros or Ipad Air to consider. Holes in my idea?
Thanks for looking and any thoughts. Gary

We must leave our mark on this worldJuly 19, 2022 at 11:21 am #1478132Wow, those look great!
I like the foliage in the first, the feeling of light and space in the second and the concentration of the figure in the third.
I was thinking of downloading ArtRage. I have a new ipad and pencil. I have procreate on it right now but I’ve heard good things about ArtRage. I’ll let you know once I do.

July 20, 2022 at 10:43 am #1478295I bought it last night. I didn’t have time to get in depth with it but it uploaded and opened in seconds. Looks like it’s going to work really well. I’ll have to play with it this weekend. Looks like it’s going to be too hot to go anywhere!

Find me on FacebookJuly 21, 2022 at 3:57 am #1478377Two years ago I bought this version of iPad
2020 Apple iPad Pro 12.9″ (diagonal screen size)
A12Z Bionic, iOS, Wi-Fi, 128GB, colour Space Grey
It’s very good for drawing and painting.
I have tried ArtRage on a small Samsung Tablet, but decided to buy Procreate for drawing on an iPad. I like the app, it has lots of features because it’s aimed at amateurs and professional. It took me some months to learn how to use it effectively.

I’ve tried painting/ drawing outside with an iPad. If it’s a day with strong sunlight then the tones on the screen look pale and are hard to get right. It’s better to stand in deep shade.
July 21, 2022 at 8:02 am #1478406Thanks Keith for your info on the Ipad Pro. It sounds encouraging. I may try Procreate someday but many comments about its complexity have made me reluctant.

I will be using the Ipad as an adjunct to painting in acrylics and oils. Artrage has seemed pretty intuitive at getting down a sketch quickly and then adjusting it to meet my needs. Plus, I like the way that Artrage allows me to mix colors on the painting surface, something that I think Procreate does not.
I have done a few plein air sketches, only so..so. I have enjoyed sketching at the bagel shop (third above).

We must leave our mark on this worldJuly 22, 2022 at 1:03 pm #1478636I forgot to mention you need to buy an Apple Pencil.
I went to draw with an iPad in a small village nearby. Just before leaving the car park I dropped the pencil on the ground, drove home, realised it was missing, returned to the car park, and found I’d driven over the pencil and cracked the plastic casing.
But it worked and it still works now.
July 22, 2022 at 5:49 pm #1478664Thanks Doug. I checked out both videos. He did not review Artrage. Taking the second video seemed indicate that he was an illustrator, cartoonist.
Thanks again Keith. It is certainly my plan to get an Apple Pencil. The pencil and larger format are my reasons for looking.
Thanks again, Gary
