        Hello fellow artists,

This post was originally posted in the Drawing subforum, but to reach a wider audience, I was advertised to post here.

My name is Linda. I am a Montreal-based visual artist and stamp collector who has been coordinating an ongoing charity project that calls for the collaboration of people from some 20 countries. Last year, I was able to gather 30+ people to produce what in philately is called ‘maxicards‘ that paid tribute to Ukraine.

Participants fixed an Ukraine support stamp on my blue-yellow postcards, and brought the cards to a post office on the 24th of August — Ukraine’s national day — for the cards to be postmarked (typically with the mention of the date and the location where the postmark was applied). For exemple:

On the side, I also produced the following hand-drawn/painted ‘cover’ (or maxicard, if you know the term) for the same cause:

It’s an artwork that incorporates the design of a stamp issued earlier by Canada Post with a strong Ukrainian appeal. Moreover, the piece was sent to a specific post office in Ablerta, Canada, for cancellation on the 24th of August, 2022. A first-day-cover cancellation that marks the issue of Canada’s Ukraine support stamp was added to the piece.

I have been hand-drawn/painted this kind of philatelic items for a decade now. For more exemples, please see my Postkard Art project page.

As the recovery will take a long time and Ukraine will be in need of funds in the foreseeable futur, I am thinking of inviting volunteer artists to produce a hand-drawn/painted cover/maxicard using a Ukraine support stamp (which in many countries can simply be a sunflower/yellow flower stamp), and get it postmarked on the 24th of August like what I did. Then these artworks will be auctionned and the proceeds will go to Ukraine relief funds.

Now my question to my fellow artists is: if you were willing to volunteer your time and energy for such an event, how long (how many months, say) does your production period needs to be?

I was hoping to organise something for next year. The problem I am running is that next year, the 24th of August will fall on a Saturday, when most of post offices around the world will be closed. So there will be a 2-year pause to the project. If I move the execution date to this year, I fear that it will be too pressing, and I will not be able to recruite as many quality artists as I hope. I think I need to give at least 1 year to each individual artist.

        Any thought?

P.S. This project can be executed on a wide range of media, from drawing to watercolour painting to even a printed copy of digital art, so long as an ordinary postage stamp and a regular postmark can be applied on the surface of the artwork (oil painting may not work though). The style too is not limited; illustration, representational, abstract, etc., something that goes with the design of your country’s stamp.

P.S. Here are some of the stamps that can be used in this project. These are the type of objects I will ask participants to incorporate into the composition of their artwork.

Are you still doing this? What are some other ways to help people in Ukraine?

There are different ways to help Ukraine. You can look for organizations aimed at helping their army and civil people. CarToDonate is a good example. These guys look for the people who want to donate their old cars to the Ukrainian army and paramedics. These cars are transformed and repaired and then taken to the front line.

I would like to donate my art, but I’m not sure if its good enough. I have little computer knowledge, so I’m not sure how to send them. I will pray, God bless you, I have such compassion for the people of Ukraine!

For God so love the world he gave His one and only son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

                    Hello all,

I am so sorry to have missed your messages. I didn’t log in to WetCanvas at all for a long time because got virtually no response initially.

Yes, I am still trying to make this project happen in 2026! Please see the project’s website:

                    https://www.stampoutwar.com/2026edition

Sadly, so far no professional artists I have contacted ever replied to my invitation, so I am the only ‘professional’ (so to speak) on board. All other participants are my friends who came from various walks of life.

My piece Peace to Us was auctioned off in late 2023, and was sold at the price of $275 (CAD).

Contact me through the project website’s contact form if you desire.

This is such a great cause, Linda! I’ve looked at the website, and  I’m sorry I didn’t understand some things. Can the Ukrainian stamps still be had through Canada post? To submit an artwork, the actual piece with the stamp, rather than a digital image, would then belong to the cause, right?  Would it be auctioned? The reproduced image on the cards would be  made by you? and would be sold through a venue or an individual? I hope I’m not asking you to repeat the info!

The prices for the cards that sold are really awesome. I can imagine them selling for a fraction, but more of them. Thank you for helping Ukraine!

                        C&C welcome
