The net has sites explaining how to paint flowers. The drawback is that most of them require your email address.

            This one might be useful:

            https://www.wikihow.com/Paint-Flowers

Although the first painting is very basic, there are half a dozen other projects in it.

Why not buy a book on the subject? In my view books are more informative that a three minute video on the net.

My advice, … See the image of a flower vase in your mind.  Don’t outline anything on your canvas.  Begin with color anywhere you think color will appear in your painting.  Don’t try to make flowers of you color.  add shadow where you think it will best describe what you envision.  Add a slash here and there for a vase, maybe some stems, maybe some leaves (these for some reason are the hardest for me to make).  Now you may add some structure.  A petal here or there. BUT, … I encourage you to add these details only where they ‘feel’ like they enhance your overall composition.  Don’t get tunnel vision by looking at a small portion of your canvas.

There are no well defined edges here.  you can see in the vase that it was built from many false edges.  the illusion of a vase was designed by ‘feel’ and by lack of inhibition.  Wine works well for this technique.  A nice Merlot always makes a good start.

                Practice, practice, practice.
                <p style=”text-align: center;”></p>

Thank you very much for your suggestions. That is funny see image in my mind. That is my problem. I kinda understand what you mean about adding color. I have a few that I thought did I do that. Then could not do again.you might be correct about the wine. It would loosen me up. Will try your ideas. Thanks

I’m of the Keep it Simple Stupid school of thought.  KISS.  Try this. ,,, Use only CYMK, Process blue, Process Yellow, Magenta and Black. (tons of white of course).  Thes colores are alsmost guaranteed to give good results.  It will be helpful to mix a little of each color, CYMK into your color of choice, for example, into a red vase, mix a small amount of cyan, yellow and black, (a very small amount), this will help to balance all your colors.   In the final pure color could be used.  Or an accent outside ot th CYMK cojuld be added.

                        :bye:

I feel sure that I’ve seen—on Instagram—an ad that went something like “would you like to paint flowers but don’t know where to start?”

It was for an online course I think.

PLEASE how do I make these dreadful yellow things go away?

Well, I surely don’t paint ONLY “flowers in a vase”, but I’ve done enough of them, and sold enough of them to figure that I’ve experienced some degree of success in doing so.

I believe the first thing with which you need to deal is to decide early on whether you’d prefer to paint an impression of flowers in a vase, or…..to paint “flowers In A Vase”.  I can’t help you much with the former, but I surely CAN help you with the latter, as I pride myself on true realism.

This is one example of  a 16″ x 20″ oil on canvas, titled, “Flowers In A Vase”.  I sold it at an art competition in which it was entered.

Please let me know if you believe that I can contribute to your efforts aimed toward painting flowers in a vase.  Glad to help. :D

(This does not occur in one fell swoop; it requires many layers, and glazes to accomplish.  Many do not have the patience that such a result requires, so if you feel that you don’t, you may prefer to explore another route.)

Patrick is certainly not wrong in what he says but at the same time I undestand your response. I think your difficulty might be that you are, as yet, still uncertain about what type of work you want to produce—realist or expressive. Painting flower still life is quite a narrow specialism, but I feel certain that I have seen an ad on Instagram for someone offering tuition; I think it went something like Want to paint expressive flower paintings but don’t know where to start? I’ll try to watch out for it again and come back if I see it.

Of course, if it’s realism you’re after then it won’t be of use to you.

Nice painting Sunflower18! You have your own style. I see that most painters improve their skills by copying others, either styles, brush strokes and other techniques. That’s a normal way to advance. And that realism in WFMartin’s painting is harder to master, but most people will quickly see the beauty in it.
