December 22, 2012 at 8:00 pm #1176546Hi, David! I’m waiting for Caryls response, especially to see the PR254! Yay, Caryl
I’m becoming resigned to yellows/reds being unavailable for the most part…one watercolorist I’ve seen added her granulations to the outside of her yellows, melting them in a bit to get a special look to those non-granulating shades. But I keep on hoping/dreaming…..some day my yellow will come along !
Yes, when Old Holland granulates, they GRANULATE! I will take your advice on getting some Mag. Blue and stocking up!
I couldn’t get on the Facebook page, but loaded both your blogspots on my Favorites list…couldn’t get on to the David’s place…it showed not Mobile and unavailable. It will be a treat to peruse the blogs!

December 22, 2012 at 8:06 pm #1176547Oh, my, are we doing cross-postings or what?
Caryl, Thank You! That Mummy Bauxite is beautiful! Super beautiful! It looks perfect for melting in some reds and getting some lovely red looks without having to buy a granulating red! PERFECT and on my shopping list it goes! No worries about the PR254….the Mummy Bauxite will take care of that problem pronto fast!
Your swatches are such a perfect help and resource to us all! Thank you so much for your time and effort, it is very much appreciated! Wet Canvas needs to give a few extra stars for all your hard work and your sharing!!!!!!!!!

Under the Concrete are Flowers Yet to be Born...from a Chilean PoemDecember 22, 2012 at 8:07 pm #1176537I’m thinking of these (from my pared-down list ) of Daniel Smith Granulators:
Lemon Yellow
Transparent Yellow OxideTransparent Brown Oxide
Mummy Bauxite
Geothite BrowPerylene Scarlet
Transparent Red Oxide
Burnt SiennaCobalt Green
Kiwi
From my swatch tests on Arches 140lb CP, the only ones on your list here that come even close to ultramarine-like textures are:
Geothite (this was the closest to a granulating Raw Sienna that I considered, but not exact enough so I thought to mention it, but maybe you’d think it works.
Burnt Sienna
Cobalt Green
Mummy Bauxite’s not as granulating as the three above per my tests, but it does have some texture; you need those dots!:)

http://dpc-watermedia.blogspot.com/December 22, 2012 at 8:10 pm #1176548Thanks, David, I will give the Burnt Sienna a try, as well as the Cobalt Green. I saw Caryl’s swatch of the Mummy Bauxite…I know it will work wonderfully, especially if I experiment and find what colors will push it away and/or mingle with it…..
I’m thinking Geothite, too.
Lucky me, Daniel Smith gave me a buy $50 and get shipping free “coupon,” which I have held on to! Whoopee! (I’m no dummy!)

December 22, 2012 at 9:00 pm #1176539Weird! Here’s what it did for me (it’s the one with the yellow box around it; all the swatches are in the same arrangement as–and come from–the dots above):

http://dpc-watermedia.blogspot.com/December 22, 2012 at 9:51 pm #1176549Hey, all! My head is, indeed, swimming! It will take me a while to process all this….:) ! Thank You!
David, I guess I’m “locked” out of Facebook, since I’m not a member and can’t log in! I did find you on both blogs and on ArtAmericaOnline (place that on your sig line?).
I am humbled.
Your DAILY paintings! Oh, my! My favorite (can there actually be just one?) is Fiery Hills. I saw a Phoenix on the left! But there are so many more that I fell in love with! And wish you would take many (most of them) onto the next level!
I saw someone once ask on WetCanvas if one can paint abstract, etc., in Watercolor…I would direct them to your site! I most especially love your hills and river series…. Your realistic river series is breathtaking, interspersed with your more abstract golden river (and other rivers)…overwhelming. My computer was too slow to view all your Eyes and Skies, but I plan to take more time and view them all.
Again, I am humbled. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.

Obviously, there’s more to this pigment than I discovered, thanks Greg!
I went back to my dot and fiddled around with the paint on several papers and was able to get some granulation out of it–and also failed to get much in several instances.
So, it’s not what I’d consider a reliable granulator, nor a dramatic one, compared to those I rely on, anyway, which you can’t NOT granulate with as a rule. Plus its color is not much different from many other brick reds I have including several that granulate more freely and dramatically, for me, the way I paint. Like Terre Ercolano on the same swatch sheet for instance. Seems like these earthy brick reds are pretty much a dime a dozen in the pigment world, as well as in the dirt world:) For maximum brick-red graininess I guess I’ll continue to rely on DS Lunar Earth.
Nonetheless, Greg’s post is a great reminder of how you’ve gotta try these things out for yourself, on your papers, with your brushes, and most of all with your own touch and your own instincts. Another plug for Dan Smith’s dots product! I do so wish ALL color-men would follow his example! I know it would lead to me buying even more paints than I currently do, assuming that’s possible:) Also good to remember that there’s usually more to most things than will appear from a cursory or habit-ridden exploration…

December 23, 2012 at 11:39 am #1176550Ah, Rusty! Indeed, I have tried W/N Granulating Medium, after buying it I was going to sell it on eBay, but thought it would be a cruel trick to play on any buyer. But, that is me, I could not get it to work for me, at all. I have heard people having success with the medium; but, again, not me! I still have the bottle, will pull it out, and try again….with more water this time, that may be the trick. But even the folk who had success didn’t get the granulation they wished for.

Under the Concrete are Flowers Yet to be Born...from a Chilean PoemDecember 23, 2012 at 12:02 pm #1176562Kiwi – I have never used it and not likely to, but the info on Dick Blick is to use it undiluted for best results, use it instead of water to moisten your paint. Don’t know but that may be worth a try, unless of course you already have. As long as you have it experiment and play with it. Good Luck
