Okay, solo show is coming up fast! Gallery guy has asked me to start thinking about a title for my exhibition. Eeeek! You mean I have to paint *and* think? Well, the perfect moment to consult WetCanvas! :D I have a couple ideas but would love more suggestions.

So, here’s some thumbnails of the work that will be on show. (the link is to a larger version of the image). Background: the paintings are all marine subjects, mainly London’s Thames river with some of Tokyo Bay thrown in. I’ve painted piers, sides of the river walls at low tide or in interesting light, factories along the shore, bridges, etc. The titles from left to right are: Factory Piers I, London Bridge Stairs, Mountain Stream, Riverwall IV: Thames Barrier, Cannon Street Rail Bridge, Riverwall II: Greenwich, Factory Piers II, Tate & Lyle Sugar Factory, Rainbow Bridge (Tokyo).

Thank you thank you thank you! :)

Let’s see … water … water is life … all life depends on water … life revolves around water … water is life .

Maybe something like “Life of Water” … “The Waters of Life” … “Live with Water” …

How about … “Water Colors of Life” ?

Well, I’ll keep thinking, but I’ll bet others come up with more interesting things. Just thought I’d throw a few out while I thought of them. :p

    Good Luck!!!!

    Hi Tina,

It’s going to be a great exhibition! Wish I could be there!

suggestions: LIVING WATERS, EBB AND FLOW,
    LIFESOURCE, FLUID, BOUNDARIES,
    EXISTENCE, TIMELESS, ABUNDANCE,
    EVERLASTING, CRYSTAL REFLECTIONS,
DEEPER, UNFATHOMABLE, SUSTENANCE or combinations of these words. Together, these paintings could be an environmental ecological statement.

    ALL THAT FLOWS BENEATH

    FLOWING BEYOND

    BOUNDARIES

    BRIDGES AND BOUNDARIES

    BRIDGES AND BEYOND

What does water symbolize for you? Time? Sustenance?
    Channels to other places?

Bridges and rivers make me think of pathways that lead to the unknown.

If there was a job out there to “name shows” full time, I’d love to be a candidate  (not that I’d be any good at it mind you) but here goes anyway!

    ‘Flowing Visions’

    ‘Tranquil Realms’

    ‘Misted Memories’

    good luck!

“Old salt” came to mind right away. Stay away from cliche words like…memories, mystic, etc….very overworked. Old Salt Makes Port, Saltwater Colors, Old Salt; Thames to Tokyo Bay. Shore to Shore, Sea to Shining Sea.

    Cool…getting a short list now. :)

Yes, I agree about cliches, plus they’re not really me. In fact, I almost can’t wait for this show to be over! As pleased as I am with the work I really need to move on…I’m planning a new batch of more industrial paintings. Still on the river, but barges, cranes, factories. Getting away from the water itself a bit. I just feel the need for something ‘rougher’ if that makes sense – thick paint and scratching and digging with the palette knife.

I’m shocked lee thinks this could be an environmental, ecological statement! Ack! Scary. It’s just pretty shadows and shapes to me. Guess I need to come up with a more artsy ‘vision’. :)

Thanks for the help! I’ll let you know what I decide. Figure I’ll pick 2 or 3 and let the gallery owner choose which he thinks will work best.

    Ta,
    Tina.

you want a vague title that gets people to think on their own.

don’t use the word “water” or “reflections”. use an obtuse reference that maybe has nothing to do with what you painted. for instance,,,,,why did you paint all these aspects of water?

maybe you like the way the light ripples off the flowing water.

maybe you like the ambience, the calm, that is part of the waterway experience.

maybe you like the way water flows differently.

you should know better than anyone here.

I feel the word “Thames” really needs to be in the title. Maybe “water” but I actually hadn’t considered it. I think it’s important that the idea of water is there – this gallery does well but is out of the way, so people come when their favourite “theme” is on (marine, figures, cityscapes, etc.) The title isn’t actually anywhere in the gallery itself (on walls or price list) but just on invites and posters.

I definitley agree on people thinking for themselves! That’s why I keep my titles either numbered or very literal – like “Cannon Street Rail Bridge”. I don’t want it to be “Rail Bridge at Dusk” or, er, I dont know… something with emotional words like dusk, dawn, sunset, sunshine, misty, moody. I’d rather the person decide for themselves what the light means to them. Of course, there are exceptions, and *of course* I use these words in paintings I put on eBay. :)

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw your thumbnails was:

        then i think you should simly call it something like “marine paintings” since you’re describing simply a generic subject matter…..{M}

I really like BRIDGES AND BOUNDERIES. I think it’s literal enough to allow viewers to associate their own thoughts and feelings, and it has good alliteration with the two B words. Flows nicely.
        Just a thought.

        Good luck with the show!

When I looked at your work I saw a lot of motion and movement in it. How about “Thames in Motion”?
