Hi Robert … thought I’d join in. I did this in the gouache corner as a WIP so heres an abbreviated WIP. Your tutorial notes are so inspiring.
Loki, the reference..Colours are paynes grey, burnt umber, raw sienna, cobalt blue and white. The pink is DS quin rose.
The size is 10×9 Arches CP
First a sketch …
Then a went into wet wash of quin rose watercolur over especially the ears.
Then start blocking in the tonal areas … dark first then midtones, then lighter until the paper is well and truly broken …
Then the fun part … the eyes …And when that is finished … the fur … endlessly …
I made some adjustments to the nose and ears since the gouache WIP so heres the final …
What colour was your Bunny?Annie

My Flickr SiteApril 11, 2012 at 5:49 am #1159270Thank you Robert, I will practice with your close up and try to make the fur look like fur – I think that trying to do it all in watercolour is too advanced for me. So, I mix it up, watercolours, pencils and buy some Titanium White Gouache. I enjoy the detail work it’s very relaxing for me.

our little Bunny was a tabby european the end of her tail was white and she jumped like rabbit so her name .She had prononciation problem and coldn’t say the ”M” so she say ”e” ”ow” instead of meow and there was no cat othophonist nearby but she could hear the word ”Milk” from a mile away we had to spell it when we had to say the word:)Bev you can use Mix mediums. For that course I m trying to use only transparent watercolour but I really like watercolour and gouache I find them complementary
Robert:cat:April 11, 2012 at 5:08 pm #1159271Hello Robert — The image of Bunny in the yard — shows very well how the white fur covers the tabby fur. Also on the foot. Thank you for the beautiful picture of a magnificent cat.
Carl Brenders – unbelievable talent; such realistic looking fur and feathers and woods and grasses and wow . . . . .!
(Bonjour Robert — L’image de Bunny dans la cour — montre très bien comment la fourrure blanche couvre la fourrure tigrée. Aussi sur le pied. Merci pour la belle image d’un chat magnifique.)

Well here’s my try at the cat. I didn’t find it easy and will welcome comments on what I can do to improve it.
I learnt lots about Gouache painting this kitten. This is the photo reference – thanks to Lady Carol
And this is my Gouache painting of it.

April 12, 2012 at 3:43 am #1159180Hi Viv this is a pretty Kitten good choice and you did very well there are a lot of good things about it.It makes a nice painting the way it is and if you feel like pushing yourself more you can add some more very light strokes of very pale color in the lightest zones of the fur and some like i did below the right ear to show more the volumes.
I did a rough photoshop edit to show you what I mean
I added also some more fur on the cat shouder
Then on the top of the head I made it lighter so the line is less obvious and the in middle part of the top of the head is not so concave so I added some more hair like in the photo on top of the head there are also some long loose hair light sienna or raw umber going up as far as the end of the ears
At the tips of the ears therer are some hair sort of raw umber color growing out alittle like a lynx
You can darken the top of the iris lie with humans this part has a cast shadow wich makes the eye more 3D
You can make some whiskers longer down to the front leg where the fur is darker so they’re more noticableSo it is up to yo to do more it is less than one hour work remember when you do layers with gouache not to wet and not over and over in the same area ,if there is some thig not good let it dry and then you can remove it with some water or repaint over it

April 12, 2012 at 2:15 pm #1159235Robert – Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions. I knew the kitten needed something else to make it look more “finished”, I just wasn’t sure what.
This is a great class and I’m learning so much about using Gouache. I’m looking forward to next weeks class on painting “dogs, as I have 2 dogs so I’ve got a photo of my “Jack Russel” dog “Drum” sorted out to paint for it.Animal & Wildlife, Floral & Botanical, Watermedia

WATERCOLOR HANDBOOKApril 13, 2012 at 7:02 pm #1159103Caryl, Sweetie is adorable.
Ulla, your furry creature made me chuckle. Lots of fun!
Betty, lovely blending of the fur colors.
Maureen, your black dog came out great. Doesn’t looked overworked to me at all.
Vivien, great improvement from the first try at tiger fur and the second. Your kitten came out very nicely. The gouache worked very well for you. Great job on the eyes and fur.
Bonnie, nice work on your fur samples.
Bev, good practice pieces. The best way to learn is to give it a try and experiment. Each sample was better than the one before.
Joy, nice work. I especially like your orange kitty.
Annie, beautiful job on the black cat.
I’ve started to work on a gray cat but it’s not finished yet.

painted on matboard witha bit of a WC BG

April 15, 2012 at 2:03 am #1159183Bonnie, they’re both great that will be fun if dogs come in blue too.
It is up to you but you can continue the dog portrait
Lacey is beautiful I like the texture you’ve got in the fur and the suggstion of the shirt with a little echo of the cat color works great the black athe the bottom left is a good idea too. You’re doing very well with gouache!
One micro thing, on her left eye the pupil is tilted to the right and you did it to the left cats pupils are both tilting towards the nose with goucghe it can be fixed easily, when you have to fix a small detail like this you can erase it by scratching wiht a skarp blade safer and quicker than washing it with water so you do not have to wait until it dries to repaint over it:)Robert:cat:
