I just splurged and purchased the Artists Holbein Set of 40. I’ve only ever used inexpensive Pentel, Cray-Pas, and Loew Cornell brands…
I’m excited to use professional grade oil pastels for the first time ever! lolDoes anyone use or have any tips or opinions of these pastels?
February 26, 2018 at 7:14 pm #573462Sorry, I don’t. I’ve only used senneliers, mungyo soft oil pastels, and craypas. I’ve heard they are soft, but maybe not as soft as the senns.

February 27, 2018 at 2:28 am #573464Holbeins are fun. They are opaque, rather firm but with a very smooth feel to them. I can’t say I use them much. They are more of an addition and I use the light shades of the vandyke brown and indian red for skin tones. I don’t think there are different tips for them than other ops. They are a bit annoying because they aren’t wrapped which dirties your hands a lot more and tends to get the sticks dirty. I know some people wrap them. I’ve toyed with the idea of using cigarette rolling paper to wrap them. Never tried it, though.

March 4, 2018 at 9:37 am #573465I have this set and really like it. I actually considered no wrappers a plus. I turn my sticks on their sides for large passess often especially sky’s. I use them in conjunction with Senneliers. The bulk of my paintings a Holbein with Senneliers for final passes. I use a lot of paper towels to clean my sticks and hands often. I also like to use mineral spirits and paint brushes with these for blending. I recommend keeping the colors in their separate little boxes as you work as to not get the sticks dirty.
Criticism always welcome!

@jenniferpaints http://jrcs.com.au/artistJune 11, 2018 at 11:54 pm #573463If I had to pick only one brand of OP, it would easily be Holbein artist-grade. I’d hate to give up my giant stick of white Sennelier and their giant blender stick, but Holbein s are my favorite consistency overall, and they are so pigment rich.
