Hi, i start this thread just want to confirm with you who used Holbein (type 250 /500/1000)palette before. I had bought a new Hobein 250 metal enamel palette yesterday and use it for only once.(after using, i used clear water , paper towel and some tooth paste to clear color stains on its surface . Then i found the glaze of surface drop out!!!:( (as attached picture shown)!
I cannot believe the quality of this palette is such horrible~ Before that i heard from Wetcanvas that many guys have used his/her Holbein 500 for more than 10 years, so i thins the quality is good and durable。

Plus, this palette is really eazy to be stained!
Now i consider to switch back plastic palette. Stained? That’s OK, i’ll buy another one since its cheap enough. Did you have any high quality metal palette recommend? Lower stained and durable metal enamel palette please, thank you! By the way ,i do enjoy the enamel surface when mixing.

It is not glaze, it is enamel paint, do not rub hard on it. Also, it stains less than other palettes. It will last a long time, just use it till it starts to rust, then buy/make another one. Don’t worry about those tiny problems, it will not be a problem when painting with it.

That is nice looking palette! I agree with the comment above, don’t worry about that and maybe put in some tape there or something to avoid the enamel to keep peeling of. I wouldn’t treat such a palette as you did though, that procedure is mostly needed for plastic or heavily beading metal palettes. It was beading that bad? Tim Wilmot uses this palette and it seems to work almost like porcelain and i doubt he treated in any way, but i might be wrong.

Sorry, but “don’t worry about it” isn’t acceptable if it were may palette. This is a NEW palette. There is a quality control problem if the first time it is washed, enamel paint chips off.

That said, I have some vintage palettes and they have missing spots, etc. I just spray them with enamel paint on the inside and go on painting. The only ones I haven’t touched are my Roberson and a few Winsor and Newton, mostly because the original surface is good enough to use as it is.

But if I had that palette and it was new, I would contact the manufacturer or the vendor I bought it from and complain. For a new palette to chip like that simply invites it to rust.
