I need help with the background. It is dead and the fish is totally disconnected. I don’t want to do more detail on the fish til I sort the background. But am at a lose as to what to do next. No Reference to work from.
September 9, 2021 at 12:54 am #1433780Is it a dead fish on the rocks? You need some shadow wonder it.

We must leave our mark on this worldSeptember 9, 2021 at 2:48 am #1433792thanks, you’re right, I didn’t even think of shadows.
September 9, 2021 at 8:29 am #1433849Google bass underwater to get some ideas. In a lot of pictures you can’t see far, just a blue or green haze beyond the foreground. The background you have right now looks a bit like a landscape and maybe that’s why it feels off. You can also add a few plants.
C&C always welcome. Michelle

Every painting is a new adventure.September 9, 2021 at 9:13 am #1433862He doesn’t look dead to me, he looks @?@% pissed off
But shadows, I think the rocks are lovely and have shadow, I think I see a thin wash, hinting of shadow under the firsh, and his/her belly has shadows. I see a slight conflict of interest, keeping the lovely rocks and their shadowing intact, but give shadow to the hovering body. I think maybe try on some quick sketch if you worry about going wrong. But a very thin transparent wash of some suiting colour, tofor shadow of fish on the rocks, WITHOUT disturbing the shadowings you already made? Because when I see it 7n this state, it is lovely, and that rock area is great, and in a way I think it is finished. The balance of stuff in the picture is optimized…..

Do as Lavender Frost suggests … some visual references of underwater will help a lot. Also visit the Reference library here and try a search for underwater … unfortunately I cannot direct you straight to Lisilk, who has many underwater images there, but here’s the link to the correct category …. At first glance I thought those were clouds on top. Could just be my computer screen though. Lavender is right about color, when I use to skin dive, the water usually has a green/blue tint, especially if it’s sunny up-top. Not always though. Can’t wait to see the finished piece. Lots of reference here to work with.

Well, maybe if it is supposed to be under water…. well, then you need to do sth. I read it as a flying/ hovering fish over rocks and with a dramatic cloud play and hprizon of several dark misty islanss or seacoast or simply rising dark clouds.Honestly, even if you intended an underwater scene, I would suggest keeping this as is, amd starting a new one for underwater seascape. If I had made that I would keep it like that. It is quite witty I think.
I get the feeling you are very critical and that makes your judgement overly negative. I feel it is funny, striking, witty and held together in colour. I see a over-water seascape. But even if you want to make it underwater, don’t make it too green/blue. Because the limited palette is very nice.

I think that if this os shallow water with a rocky bottom then I believe the water doesn’t reslly hsve much colour? or the light could be a bit brownish, yellowish. Perhsps a little bit trans äparent oxide brown or trans ox yellow. but really, I think this is finished and great.

September 10, 2021 at 1:19 am #1434003I think what threw me was the background looks like a landscape and cloudy sky.

We must leave our mark on this worldSeptember 11, 2021 at 11:25 am #1434317Thanks all. I’m calling it done.
September 11, 2021 at 11:29 am #1434319September 11, 2021 at 1:37 pm #1434346Just below the sea water surface the light is almost like out of the water. As you go deeper, red and yellow components gradually diminish, and it’s the blue component that remains. At a depth of 15-20 m there is only blue+green or blue light. If you take a photo, everything will look blue. The light intensity is very low because the water absorbs a big part, that’s why divers use flashlights most of the times and so, colors on photos appear correct. Nevertheless flashlights are active at small distance. The background appears dark / very dark blue.
I wouldn’t expect to see details on the background, unless it is at very low depth with very clear water and this doesn’t happen very often.
