I’m doing a fix for a friend. I had to take off varnish to get to the under layer but I’m not sure I got all the varnish off.

Does Gamsol get varnish off from an acrylic painting?

What happens if you paint acrylic on top of varnish, and then varnish on top of that?  Will it be ok?

        Thank you.

Is  the varnish Gamvar? If so then Gamsol should remove it..

Unfortunately I don’t know what kind of varnish it is, and no way to find out.

I have never had to try this …. is there an obscure patch where you could perhaps try with a cotton bud?

                Similarly, try gently sanding?

Contact Golden or the other manufacturers for advice … someone may be able to help.

I wouldn’t advise paint over varnish … may not stick!

                Cheers, Maureen

Thank you. Yes, I’m contacting Golden today. Hope they have a solution.

Let us know what they say. I have sometimes wondered, after varnishing a painting, what if I want to change it? Would another coat of varnish afterwards keep it all together?

                    C&C always welcome. Michelle

Unless you are certain that the varnish is acrylic, do not paint acrylic over it. Unless you use a special sealer over oil, acrylic will eventually flake off. I suggest you use a sealer. It’s called Zinsser Bulls Eye Clear Shellac Water-Based Sealer. It dries in less than an hour and can be painted over in a couple of hours. It’s available in a spray and as a brush on. I use cheap foam brushes when I cover yard sale discarded sofa paintings. They are usually cheap canvas but usually quality wood supports and reasonably good frames. Hope this helps.
