This was done with mostly Pan pastels and a touch of Pastel pencils. I just picked up pan pastels a few months ago but I think I’m in Love! I haven’t fell so hard for medium since discovering digital painting 12 years ago but I think this is the real thing!
Having no traditional pastel experience, I’m still trying to figure out how these work but I am having so much fun!

All comments and critiques gladly accepted! Thanks for looking!

            Looks very good!

I hadn’t heard of Pan Pastels before, so I found their web site just now. Seems to be a very interesting medium. Once in a while, a prospective painter comes here to WC and asks about a way to paint, but avoiding some real or perceived problem with oils/acrylics/watercolors. I suggest colored pencils (or pastels), but they don’t blend like paint. These Pan Pastels do. I looked at the MSDS, and they seems non-hazardous. Not clear whether they cure after time, or whether they remain permanently subject to change.

Thanks! The don’t cure but they also don’t flake like regular soft pastels. You don’t really need to use a fixative but they will smudge if not framed under glass. I love the way you can blend them either in the pan or on the paper. I think having no pastel expierence was a good thing in this case. Just went with what felt right. I have tried so many mediums but this is my favorite so far. I used to use colored pencils but after a while I lost patience. Didn’t have as much time as I do now. I still do oils (watersoluble) and watercolors and you can throw in Oil pastels but this is a clear winner so far.

I like the controlled but “juicy” feel to these. Your fun is showing through. Gary

I note that the Pan Pastel colors have their pigments specified (such as PY74), so it should be fairly easy for an existing painter to try this product.

The atmosphere and perspective is so well done in this one. Beautiful to look at.
