This is interesting. So i made some research- there are countless hints of an Grumbacher/Schmincke relationship, including the fact that Schmincke acrylics where originally developed in the USA.
Above this, Schmincke owns the domain “grumbacher-farben.de”:

Thanks to these posts, I have figured out he must have been given these as a boy. I too, wondered about the dual Schmincke/Grumbacher branding as I’d never seen that before. I do love the pastels, amazing saturation of color and so easy to apply. I am not a pastel artist so these are gently used by me but are terrific for applying that hint of sky and grass when rendering color to architectural elevations.
March 30, 2016 at 4:04 pm #1193644I just wish i could get my hand on 3 specific Grumbacher colours. I love them all but there are 3 that work beautifully as a base for my backgrounds in my portraiture. I have yet to find a suitable replacement

May 3, 2018 at 8:32 am #1193655I just found a vintage set with Schminke a and Grumbacher both on the wrappers. Don’t know any more but they are not as buttery as I would expect from Schminke, could texture change with age?

In re-reading through the thread, there was some connection between Schmincke and Grumbacher through the years. Apparently prior to WW II, Grumbacher distributed Schmincke pastels in the US. After WW II, Grumbacher began making their own pastels. What exactly they called them, I don’t know. Perhaps the pastels that came to be known solely as Grumbacher, had both names associated with them for a time. So, to answer your question, Could texture change with age? Not usually, but probably is possible. Or the pastels might be Grumbacher pastels, which were a medium hardness. Or Schmincke pastels used to be harder than those made today. Alas, I have no definitive answers.
