How to slow down the drying of Gouache in your palette and make them smoother to apply.

This video by Lena Rivo explains how to use W&N Watercolour Blending Medium to slow down drying.

Thanks for the tip, Doug. Will definitely look into this.

Nice work sanlyn, I have ordered blending medium and a sealed palette and let’s see if it works.

Doug, I live in the southwest, where it’s extremely dry, so my paint literally dries on the brush, before I can get it to the paper. So a couple of years ago, someone in one of my art groups suggested that I try QoR synthetic ox gall and it has been a complete game changer! In most climates, you only need to add 2-4 drops into your painting water, but where I’m at, I add 5-6 (depending on how dry the air is that day) and it gives me so much more time – it’s wonderful. I highly recommend it!

I used ox gall 60 years ago to make solid colours more fluid when painting mine plans. It is a natural detergent.

Wow, I didn’t know that it’s a detergent… What does that mean in relation to watercolor? I haven’t noticed it affecting my paintings negatively, but I’m new to watercolor…

                            Wikipedia:

“Ox gall is gall, usually obtained from cows, that is an ingredient in bile soap and mixed with alcohol and used as the wetting agent in paper marbling, engraving, lithography, and watercolor painting. It is a greenish-brown liquid mixture containing cholesterol, lecithin, taurocholic acid, and glycocholic acid.”
