Deborah: As always, it is nice to see your work. All of these are excellent. I don’t know how you work so small. I have been doing some 5″x 7″ paintings and it is driving me bonkers.

[FONT=Century Gothic]So when is this "Old enough to know better" supposed to kick in???
Thank you so much, Doug! I’m liking this technique for some of my paintings. It gives the painting a kind of moodiness, I think. I decided to rework the figures because they just didn’t convey the story I wanted to tell.. I think I can call this finished now (I hope 😊😊):
My latest (attempt at) painting in gouache.. I sat down to see how gouache worked as a portrait medium.. I’m not a portrait artist by any stretch of the imagination, but I like tryin new things. This is only 5″ x 5″ 😕
I love these moody effects Michaei, well done! The figures turned out very expressive.
Cheers, Lynn

It’s hard to find much gouache instruction online except for James Gurney, but I came across a YouTube video by Jeffrey Watts who runs an atelier. He says gouache is his second favorite medium (next to oils). His dad was an amazing illustrator so he probably was exposed to good technique from a young age. This is from one of his Friday Night Sessions and is almost 3 hours long. But he demonstrates several different small paintings and shows how he puts together his travel kit. You might want to fast forward through some of it to get an overview but it’s very good:
