I remember seeing someone say that they could not obtain these in the US, I found a place that does. I found an ad in the Pastel Journal and rememered seeing it, is it ok to post a web site link? I don’t want to break a rule. I have no connection to them. Just in case the person still wanted it.

Here is what the ad says.

Love at first touch, pastels Girault are so versatile that they can be used early in the painting like a hard pastel, and throughout the painting like a softer pastels. Dense but smooth, creamy without being overly soft, they may be the only pastel you need. http://www.pasteletc.com or email [email protected]

These have been made for 300 years and were only available in france for the longest time, the little store was only open one day a week and for very few hours, so it was real hard to get them. The web site looked interesting, but I have never used them, I only remember reading that somoene said you could not get them here…

Laura – You are thinking of Roche pastels. (See my article in the current issue of “The Pastel Journal,” or on my web site http://www.katzhome.com/gallery.htm at the bottom of the page.

It is true, though, that Girault pastels were not available in the U.S. until recently. I bought some in Paris a few years ago and liked them a lot. (They used to be known as “Fantin-LaTour”) They are currently available at Rochester Art Supply http://www.fineartstore.com and Dakota Art Pastels http://www.dakotapastels.com
