Anyone have experience using Gamblin Modern Organic oil paints?

No, but I’ve used modern organic oil paints from Winsor & Newton, Holbein, M Graham, and Grumbacher. I wouldn’t expect Gamblin paints to be any different, except that Gamblin paints tend towards the oily side. And all Gamblin paints use linseed oil, while some brands use safflower oil, and M Graham uses walnut oil.

Since they are all transparent or semi-transparent do you mix them with classic mineral paints when you don’t want transparency?

Red iron oxide, Green Chrome oxide, Titanium White and even Aluminum flake paint are very welcome to mix with Organic pigments! :)

I regularly use phthalo green, and if you mix it with yellow ochre you get a nice bright opaque green. Phthalos are too strong to be used by themselves straight out of the tube.

Yellow, oranges, and reds tend to be weak compared to the equivalent cadmium colors, but there are some successful oil painters who use organic colors instead of cadmiums.

Thanks for the tips! I’ve used Cadmium colors for 15 years, but I wear surgical gloves and don’t suck my paintbrushes so I’ll continue with them as my mainstays with the organics thrown in for spice. Must do some color charts.
