I think I am just about done with this but it seems like it needs a little something. It’s an 10″x8″ acrylic on canvas.

February 15, 2019 at 7:33 pm #783283I think this is great, honestly not sure it needs much else. Anything I’ve thought of would take away. Maybe a small bird somewhere?
February 15, 2019 at 9:11 pm #783287I second to a small bird. I can see on the lower branch of the tree on the right side. May be get a small cut-out and put it there, see if you would like it, without being committed. I would hate to ruin a beautifully done painting.
C&C always welcome
February 16, 2019 at 10:08 am #783277February 16, 2019 at 2:36 pm #783280I didn’t put the bird in but am still thinking about it. Added a few highlights and got a better picture outside. Thanks for the kind comments. It’s hard to believe I’m actually painting! This one was more of a struggle in some ways because i used a super cheap Walmart canvas with several colors of super cheap acrylic paint, having run low on my most used colors and one winter storm after another prevented me from going to Michael’s. Let’s just say that quality materials make a big difference!

February 16, 2019 at 2:45 pm #783284Nice update.
A good artist can use any material to make something worthwhile, and you’ve done that here. My Walmart used to carry Daler-Rowney System3, which aren’t half bad (I’d put them a cut above Liquitex basics in some ways for student quality paints) but they don’t any longer. But their canvases, yeah…definitely need a coat or three more of gesso before you can use ‘em!
February 16, 2019 at 5:09 pm #783281Maybe I should get some gesso. There’s a lot I don’t know about painting.
I posted this picture online and someone wants to buy it! I have no idea how to price it. I probably have about 8 hrs into it. I don’t know if this is the right place to ask this question, but how does an artist come up with a reasonable price for a painting?

February 16, 2019 at 6:06 pm #783285Everyone does it different, but I start with a price per square inch. A good start would be anywhere from 35 cents to a dollar a square inch. Then, you can figure supplies and maybe it if took you a little extra time for something, you can add to that or not. I think pricing takes experience and nerve. LOL! You don’t want to charge too little, but you certainly don’t want to charge too much. I charge 75 cents per square inch, total, unless it is a commission, then there are charges on top of that. That is my uneducated opinion….
You picture is lovely, by the way. I would add some dark shadows to bring out the highlights, though. It is very exciting that someone wants to buy it.

C & C WelcomeFebruary 16, 2019 at 7:44 pm #783282Thanks Ginny. If i go 50 cents per sq inch I make about $5 an hour lol. I knew there was a reason I like to do bigger paintings! On the flip side, painting is fun so it’s easier if I look at it like that. I worked in graphic arts for over 30 years, doing stuff for other people, (like signs and vehicle graphics), but this is totally different.

February 16, 2019 at 8:57 pm #783286Unfortunately, when you are starting out, you won’t be making a living. But, charge what people will pay. If you charge too little, people wonder if it is any good. LOL! But, it is all relative.

Comments and Criticism always welcome!February 17, 2019 at 5:57 am #783279I don’t come close to making a living at this – but I want to make sure my time and skill are not too discounted. I ask $1 per square inch. So far people have been happy to pay that for an original work.
This has been for people I know. I may up that amount as I begin to reach people I don’t know.

February 19, 2019 at 4:22 pm #783278every painting I did I had to struggle to get what I want. nothing is easy for me. I do use good paints and brushes but it still hard. But I remember someone ask salvador dali if he was very good a painter and he say No he thought the painters of classic art like Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt van Rijn was much better that his art techniques was
So do not look too hard at yourself. just do the best you can
