I know how they got our names(I got few times such invitations too)
I was too on artexpo..in NY in 2001 so they purchased catalog with all our names with emails and keep sending naive artists invitations..Good buisness!!I have long wondered how they get our names, and I still am wondering. They started sending me invitations to this in large white envelopes with beautiful stamps long before I was even on the internet, and I never showed my work at an expo, so that isn’t it either. At that time, I was entering competitions often, however, and once, I got stung by a large scam “show” in New England, so that could have been how they got my address. I am not saying that they are a scam operation, but I cannot delude myself into thinking that I am in the same category with “important” artists who are invited, through their dealers, to attend the Venice biennial (a prestigious show). I agree with those who say that if you have to pay to show (or, to digress, have your writing published), it is probably not a legitimate opportunity. There are better ways to advertise. Buy a quarter-page color ad in a local real estate flier, for example, or visit a city where you would like to show, tour the galleries, and send a CD slide show to your favorites, following up with a polite phone call after a couple of weeks.
If you have not been invited to this, it probably doesn’t mean your work is not worthy. It might just mean you have not entered a competition that put you on their mailing list. In short, if you have been invited, watch your ego. It may not be what you think. If you want to go and you have the money, hey, a nice vacation is always good, but, I agree, you may not want to list it on your resume as a juried show.May 3, 2009 at 3:50 pm #1033425I just got the same thing as Dee only for 2009. So Dee, tell me did you go in 2005 and what was your experience? Did you get a sponsor? :o
June 5, 2009 at 11:10 am #1033429Hello,
I just got selected yesterday for the 5-13 December 2009 Florence Biennale
I’m very happy to go. I will probably need to pay the entry fee, but I consider it an ‘investment’ in my CV. My twin (identical) is sending off his details today, his wife Vanesha Rudbaraki (exiled Iranian) did two Biennale’s in Florence and it got her into contact with art dealers and ‘marchands’, she now sells for up to 30,000€ a painting. The other point is that some more ‘art’ orientated Galleries will only review you for possible exhibition only if you have done Biennales… Definitely, a good holiday and a great investment. The selling probability is very low, lower than that of a good level Art Fair, but a Biennale is a Biennale…June 5, 2009 at 11:16 am #1033430If ever the jury select your work for a prize 1st,2,3,4th up to 5th prize, and it can, happen…if you really bring along two or three great pieces done especially for the occasion…then, you will certainly attract the ‘eye’ of some Gallery owner or dealer…this will open doors.
I’m going, see you all there !
ps. In 2005 Carlos Araujo from Sao Paulo Brazil was awarded the 2nd prize, I exhibit in two Galleries there, I sell for 2,500US$ he sells for 20,000US$ that makes a difference…and he sells a lot… -
