Yesterday I received a very flattering letter in the mail from the Florence Biennale Selection committee letting me know they’d reviewed my work online and were offering me the chance to participate in the 2005 Florence Biennale. Included were submission forms, rules, guidelines, and a whole bunch of very thorough legal mumbo-jumbo. They outlined their fees in great detail and I can’t say I’ve seen a better put-together presentation of materials.

The Sydney Biennale is on right now through Aug. 15th and the work I’ve seen around town is stunning!

Has anyone else here ever participated in this? I’m getting excited just thinking about spending two weeks on holiday in Florence!

Scam.. the organization grosses 2 million a year and does nothing for the artists… If I am not mistaken you actually have to pay like $2000 to show there. I received 2 emails from them… 1 to each of my addresses. I’m sure this same email went out to tens of thousands of artists. puting this on your resume is about as bad as the Agora gallery…

        My god.. I've landed.

there were several threads concerning Florence a few weeks ago- try searching at the top and see if they come up. Also go to http://www.artscuttlebutt.com and search for the threads on the biennual. Andy

Well I’ll keep my holiday planned but screw that. I took a wander through some photos of the past “shows” and as it turns out the work being displayed was not all that. Ahh well..I’ll wander the halls of the real museums in Florence then.

                Thanks all.

ACTAULLY ya know what? I am going to do it! I’m averaging about 6 exhibitions a year and I’ve always gone against the grain of what people think should and shouldn’t be tried. I have yet to NOT sell at any show or exhibition I’ve entered so I’m gonna see if my track record holds up.

I guess if I make a mistake I’d like it to be mine to make. All of your advice is good and well but so far I’ve done quite fine on my own deciding how best to move my career ahead. Besides, I’m very confident in the quality of my own work, and if the work around me is less so, it just means I’ll stand out that much more. (Got quite a big chip on my shoulder huh? *grin*)

No complaints thus far! *wink* As that time gets closer I’ll keep those interested posted in the results.

Til then… best of luck in your own circles…

Again I have to ask, sine I got no answer last . whats the difference between the florenze biennale and new york art expo?? florenze costs up to 2000, and new york art expo up to 5000.
Its about exposing yrself and yr artwork to 40 000 + ppl, gallery representatives, artbusinessppl etc in a short period time, what you see is what you get.
If you do the instalation, and lightsettings and such yourself, you cut down on the 2000 as well.
Noone seems to have a problem with the new york art expo?
Is it the self promotion they are obvisly doing this year?, Is it the “juried acceptence” that is bogus and invitation?

Juried acceptence can be meaningless.. and subject to whims and trends with no foresight into the greater significance and importance of an artist, or work of art.

I’ll pooo pooo on the new york art expo too.. If your willing to spend $5000 on self promotion, there are much better ways to do it I’m sure. Artists get paid to show their work.. they don’t pay to show it. As I sit here typing this, I just got a 3rd acceptance email from them. They send this email to every artist with an email address. They accept art from anyone without even looking at it. I’m quite sure they have sent acceptance letters to people that don’t even exist due to email errors. I’d like to think my art is special enough to be above the level of people that don’t even exist, or a 12 year old with rich parents and a set of watercolors. If you have the money and want to spend it, more power to you, good luck.

                        My god.. I've landed.

                            Ancelica,

I think people are always going to find a reason to say one juried show or exhibition is better than another and that paying entrance fees are bad blah blah blah. You won’t know until you do it I guess. If you can afford it. Do it. But I don’t think there is any difference between the NY Art Expo and/or the Florence Biennale. I did NY while I lived there and it required far more self-setup than apparently FB does. We’ll see what happens. In my case, who cares, I will be exposing my art to more new people and I’m making contacts from it.

                                Really some crosspostings here.
I think its great that you you are so strong and selfconfident deedee!I respect that!
I read different posts about the biennale on different sites and forums, and the saying that this is some vanity exhibition for kids/amatours with crayons and rich parents.. I think thats a bit offencive. and seriously bs.
                                Some posts says differently.
I attended the biennale last year, I dont know if there was emails sent all over the net to who ever then, but I never saw anything then about that happening, I dont like that they do that.and the jury beeing bogus? I find it strange.. but oh well.. I would have been sceptic if I had read all this before attending yes, have to admit that.

It could be because the milan triennale , venice biennale, and florenze biennale all falls on the same year in 2005.
I never got such an email myself. And I for sure dont have rich parents paying my way.
Most of those who exhibit there and at the new york art expo are proffesionals and emerging artists. Some with the longest exhibition lists from all over the world I have ever seen, some of the works were amazing, others were not. http://www.hypeless.org/index_oca.html heres one artist whos work I think is very interesting, he is a grown man, with long experience in art and exhibiting.
Thank you for the reply on the new york art expo, Im glad that maybe its the same wiew on all of these.
At all these exhibitions there will be a few very strong proffesional artists who take away all the contacts , money and glory, and many weaker , less proffesional beginners who get nothing from it. Its the same everywhere. The world of art can be brutal.
again u get what u see.

Now I feel rejected that I haven’t been invited if everyone is getting these invitations!!!

I have no problem paying to exhibit at these things- One day in the future I would like to show at NY ArtExpo, but for now, I am starting small with ArtExpo Atlanta as it is practically right next door. I can’t see trying to show half way around the world until I conquer this continent, maybe! LOL

Good luck Dee and I wait to hear about your adventure.

Ummm well, I didn’t get an email. Another local artist I know did get an email and it was an invitation not to SHOW but to submit his/her work for consideration for acceptance. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with this. I figure email is the easiest way to reach a mass number of international artists in as cheap and quick a way as possible. How else are you gonna fill an international biennale…hand deliver an invite tot heir front door? I have yet to see any email telling people they’ve already been accepted. For you to be accepted they physically mail you the paperwork outlining all the requirements.

Don’t let the negative comments on here get ya down love. Some of us get shows because of the quality of our work, not because of the exhibitions or galleries listed on our resumes. Hence why I don’t bother showing lists of where I’ve exhibited to other galleries. People could always lie anyway right? It’s about the strength of your work. And I think my work is great enough to hang anywhere from a coffee house to a major museum.

I wish to god I actually new some rich kid who’s parents were paying for their art ambitions. Such animosity towards the people isn’t exactly directed at their quality of work but more to the fact that they have it easy financially and some people don’t. *shrug* I can’t blame them for having money in the same way I can’t blame anyone for wanting to be an artist. It just is.

Like I said before, do what works for you and don’t assume everything you read here is gospel. *grin*

I exhibited in the Biennale previously. While there are some significant degrees of quality in the art on show, in general it was quite high. My costs were paid for by our department of arts and tourism, ie. the Government.(originally our arts council selected the participants). The Biennale was seen as of enough importance for the giving of four grants (in Dec 2005) to send four artist from Ireland. Six Irish artists actually took part but two paid their own way.

My benefits were in the form of contacts with foreign Galleries, International art bodies offering residencies etc. and also invites from Foreign Arts councils to exhibit and take part in other multinational events, most of which do not incur any costs.

I would agree that the Biennale sounds quite expensive, but no more so than any other major trade show. Once you are aware it is not a selling venue/show you will not be dissapointed with the experience.
