Here is my first attempt at a large (36″x48″) landscape painting. It was done in about 7 hours at a 3-day class at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. The class was titled “Loosening Up & Painting Big” led by artist Rick Wheeler. Prior to this my largest canvas was 18″x24″, so this was a large step up.
I am not particularly enthralled about the composition, but it will hang on a large stair wall (A-Frame house) until I do something better. So, here it is, “Winter Birches.”
As usual, C&C’s gratefully accepted.

Crits and Comments always welcomeApril 18, 2018 at 2:55 pm #606811I like the colors in the snow and the shadows there also.
Do you enjoy the class?
It looks like you fore-filled the class title, working big and loosening up!

I was a bit concerned about the size of the canvas, but there were at least eight others with the same size. The class was very informal with some visitors to the museum able to walk in and see what we were doing.

My concern was for the background…the sun setting was a good idea, but to my mind just a bit overdone. Maybe next time I’ll tone it down a bit.
Thanks again.

Super delivery
April 20, 2018 at 6:36 am #606807Since you’re not happy with the sky, why not work on it some more? It does look rather like a yellow mound. Look for some photos of sunsets, and study what’s actually happening in them. That said, you could turn the sky into a daytime sky. the colours reflected in the snow seem to suggest that, rather than a sun set. I’d soften the edge on the black area, too, to give it more depth.

Phranque…thanks for putting into words exactly why I said I was not thrilled with the composition. The foreground (trees/rocks/snow) is okay, but that dark band across the middle and the yellow mound are very distracting.
I have another 3×4′ canvas available and I will try the same painting, but this time as a daylight (or perhaps fading daylight) scene. I will minimize the dark band in the middle, perhaps breaking it into several areas and making it lighter.
It was a great class, again the largest canvas I’ve ever used. I stood back as the painting was critiqued by the other painters and bit my tongue when little was said by way of suggestions. When I looked at it from across the room I could see no real depth in the painting. Maybe with those changes that can be corrected. If I succeed with the re-painting, I’ll post it.
Thanks for the advice.
