I recently read a review of lucian Freud’s work in which it was mentioned that he used loads of lead white and I wondered which lead white he used ( not that using the same one will make me paint like him).
It’s largely a trivia question really, but it got me thinking about which brands the famous painters use.
Is anyone in the habit of looking to see whats on the artist’s table when they show their studio’s on TV or magazines?April 22, 2004 at 6:21 pm #1029522I read here on the WC that Nelson Shanks uses mostly Winsor Newton. I also remember reading that Salvator Dali used Blockx.
April 23, 2004 at 3:32 am #1029525I wonder if Blockx paints have changed much since Dali used them.

I wonder about stuff like that too…..and about the first question you asked…I like trivia
April 23, 2004 at 9:25 am #1029539I have read that a Mr. Sennelier began that brand back in the days of the French impressionists, and that Cezanne, among others, used his paints.

April 23, 2004 at 2:40 pm #1029523I just recently read in Techniques of the Impressionists by Anthea Callen that most of the paint used by the impressionists was ground in poppy oil, because of its handling properties and its non-yellowing quality. I believe that Blockx is one the only major line of oil paints still ground in poppy oil.

I wonder the same because a poppy oil based paint ins’t a good choice for Dali’s layered technique. I think he used Blockx Amber Medium, I am not shure about the paints.
I believe that Blockx is one the only major line of oil paints still ground in poppy oil.
Holbein paints are also still ground in poppy oil.

April 24, 2004 at 7:56 am #1029531April 24, 2004 at 10:27 pm #1029540I have been reading a Munch book recently, and just came across this quote, from one of Munch’s letters…..”I worked on the Aula paintings for 4 years. I built several huts and outdoor studios at the various places where I lived. I ordered the best canvas from Holland and used Windsor & Newton colours.”…
April 24, 2004 at 11:26 pm #1029524Holbein paints are also still ground in poppy oil.
Thanks for the info…I had no idea. I pulled out my one and only tube of Holbein and it did not say what it was ground in…at least it did not say in English. Maybe it says poppy oil in Japanese!

“I asked him what paint he uses: “I use all kinds.
I just use what I think is the best colour from each firm; yellow ochre from Winsor & Newton, terre verte from Lefranc & Bourgeois… I’ve got a store of scarlet vermilion, which isn’t allowed to be sold now but I managed to buy before they stopped it. Some of the blues I grind myself”.April 25, 2004 at 11:52 am #1029532Euan Uglow interviewed by Peter Stiles.

May 6, 2004 at 1:24 am #1029527Howard Hodgkins: Michael Harding’s
David Hockney: Michael Harding’s, after advice from the above.
Lucian Freud: Winsor & Newton and Old Holland oils. Still don’t know which lead white he uses, but this narrows it down a bit.

1cham – have a look at this page from one of them – pay attention to the heading on the page – he obviously hates people who wander about in front of the cinema screen as much as I do! (Edit – on testing it, the little animations vary – click through a few of his drawings and paintings, you’ll see the one I mean )
