How do you erase oil pastels if you make a mistake. I am using sketch pad paper.

Netta, I’ll see if Pat will move this over to our talk forum where you’ll get more responses.

Unless I were on a final stage, I would just start over on a new page of the sketch pad. On quality paper I might scrape down to the paper surface with razor blade or rub out with a cloth and just paint over the mistake.

I usually paint on canvas panels, masonite panels or 140# watercolor paper. I always gesso these surfaces and often use marble dust in the top layer of gesso to give the surface a bit more tooth to grab the oil pastels.

Hi Netta and welcome….I moved this to the talk forum, where you will get more feedback.
I usually just scrape the oil pastel away and then go over it. Sometimes there is staining from the color, but another layer of oil pastel usually covers it.
I usually work on gessoed board, so I often just wash the whole thing off with mineral spirits.

I use the Vanish 4 in 1 Eraser that you could get from Jerry’s art or ASW. Unless your paper is highly textured, I could erase almost 95% of it off.

I’d scrape it out and work over it usually. Oil pastels are so nicely opaque, most of them, that it’s not a problem. Good to know the Vanish eraser works so well, Sandra!

Also depending on the mistake, I sometimes leave it and work around it to do something other than I’d planned. This works better in landscapes than things like faces where a misplaced nose really can’t be turned into an extra one.

With the appropriate techniques, you can erase oil pastel mistakes. Start by chilling the oil pastel if the paper can handle it. Then scrape off as much of the pigments as you can. Pick up the pigments. And if all else fails, use mineral spirit or baby oil to wipe off the unwanted mark. But even after all this, some rogue pigment may remain; cover it up with a new color.
