I did this one while my daughter worked on her homework.

My frustration with watercolor and ink comes from the same place. I don’t normally have a solid idea of what I’m doing with a piece and with those mediums it’s hard to go back/cover it up.

This is beautiful. I like the recession of the more distant trees, they do look as if they’re going to start moving too.

I got used to penciling first for most ink drawing when I was a kid, at least if I wanted it precise or realistic. So that’s usually how I work now unless I’m doing fast gestures or a familiar subject. Something like this I’d pencil in the locations, not much else, then develop them. But you did fine without doing so.

I do that with watercolor too, though not as often because it’s harder to erase the pencil from under watercolor. Or the pencil guides aren’t as heavy, may only be small marks in the darkest areas so I can get rid of them by covering. If there’s ink I don’t worry though, when it’s ink and watercolor I just ink anything penciled – and if I don’t want it in the final, I erase.

But I’m not using drawing pencils when I do. I use a Tikky mechanical pencil with an HB very narrow lead and only faint guidelines, so they’re easily totally erased if I change my mind on something like proportions.

            Welcome here!
I think the medium led you to a very strong place …. it decided to make a terrified – petrified?-tree!
The other trees look ready to take fright too!

            Keep going and please share!

            Cheers, Maureen

Thank you Robert and Maureen. Robert, I try to remember to use a watercolor pencil in a tone I know I will use for my watercolors when I sketch them out. That way they just vanish into the painting. With this one I lightly drew basic shapes for the ent and then covered them with the ink. I don’t think I can see the pencil marks at this point.

I think you did a very nice job with both the textures and with the atmosphere (by which I mean the soft, foggy feel of background objects)

Wow, great job. The tree hand on the right has a very 3d quality to it.
