I had trouble with the striations on the petals, and gave up on the details of the center cone. I think a small, stiff brush would help. I only have soft brushes that won’t hold a point and smudges the paint. I negatively painted to thin and clean up the lines. Also, a beginner so it might be a technique/skill issue. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I work small as well and find smooth wood panels better for fine detail work.

It has merit in that it is not a typical view for a floral. Get those hog’s hair bristle brushes to work!!!

I can’t provide any advice but I do love the composition of this piece. the background colours were a good choice as they match with the centre of the flower. :)

Thank you all for the feedback! This is how it currently looks like –

I used a small spotter brush for the florets in the center cone. Still not happy haha. But I am taking a break from acrylic and will leave this alone for now. Thanks again!

I like the way it looks now, and I also like the way you’ve painted the background with the darker paint at the top of the painting and the lighter area at the bottom. The center of the flower looks good!

I also struggle with Acrylics, so I know how you feel! Everyone else in the world finds them so easy except me….they never come out the way I want the painting to look! I think I need to take a break from them too!

Have you checked out our July Plant Parade? This month the topic is The Lily. You may like to do a painting for it. The entries don’t have to be in until the 25th July so plenty of time – any painting or drawing medium is acceptable.

Next time start out with gesso layers or under painting layers next time, especially when the surface is so textured.
Those base layers will fill in & smooth the surface making it so much easier to get a better painting..
